China scraps JV requirement for foreign companies

Recommended Posts

Initially only restricted to EVs... which makes unfortunate timing of Ford's new Zoyte EV JV. That whole setup is obsolete before a single vehicle is made... Ford would be much better off building and selling EVs on its won in China.

China will phase out the joint-venture requirements for foreign automakers, which could open the way for more fair business practices for automakers such as Tesla.

The Beijing National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said that this year requirements will be removed for New Energy Vehicle and special-use vehicles.

Ford was betting pretty big on multiple JVs with China. This could be a BIG problem for their EV program !

Hackett mentioned in the Q1 earnings call today that Ford is restructuring the sales and marketing operations in China to combine all three Ford brands under one distribution channel.

Right now, Chang'an Ford, Jiangling Ford, and Ford (the imported ones) are three different brands sold thru three different dealer networks and each with separate marketing and sales operations. Ford will attempt to combine them into one singular brand, which should reduce cost and improve marketing and sales efficiency.

This is obviously made possible by the latest change in Chinese laws and regulations governing the auto joint ventures.
