As with every new full-size truck, the Sierra is larger than the outgoing model in almost every dimension, though exact dimensions haven't been revealed. For reference, though, the
Chevy Silverado's bed is 7-inches wider than before. The new Sierra grille is more upright than before and features new C-shaped lighting. The Denali gets LED headlights, tail lights and fog lights. Both SLT and Denali trims get unique 22-inch wheels.

As we saw in spy photos, the Sierra's interior is mostly just a copy of the Silverado's with some chrome accents sprinkled throughout. If you like the current truck interiors, you'll be pleased with the new model. Those hoping for a wholesale change will be left wanting.

The big improvements inside include a full-color heads-up display, trailer hitch assist apps and cameras, and the rear-camera mirror found in models like the Chevy Traverse and Cadillac CT6. Safety and convenience features include a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian detection and low-speed automatic braking.

Like the Silverado, there's been a significant effort to cut weight in the new Sierra. The 2019 model loses as much as 360 pounds compared to the current truck. It uses aluminum for the doors, hood and tailgate. Steel is still used for the fenders, roof and standard cargo box.

The Denali, however, gets the real surprise here. The top-tier trim will use carbon fiber rather than steel for the bed box, saving 62 pounds. Carbon fiber only replaces the steel inner panels and floor. GMC says the carbon fiber will also help scratch and corrosion resistance.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any uglier. Side profile is fine but that grille is atrocius. And what the hell is the purpose of that trick tailgate?

It's far better looking than the Silverado, but as usual, that's not hard to do.

Supposedly it's to more easily get things out of the bed?

From autoblog:

including the trick tailgate seen above, and a new feature that helps one get into and out of the bed using an assist handle.

Not quite sure how that works, though? I guess they're saying you climb up on the bumper, and then over this lower portion? Makes no sense.

Here's from GM's press release:

The next generation 2019 Sierra debuts a GMC exclusive, industry-first MultiPro Tailgate that is the segment’s most innovative tailgate ever. Standard on SLT and Denali, the MultiPro Tailgate features six unique functions and positions, offering enhanced second-tier loading and load-stop solutions, a standing workstation mode and easier access to items in the box.

The MultiPro Tailgate also incorporates a step entry and egress mode that, when paired with the assist handle, offers both step and seated functionality, with a maximum weight capacity of 375 pounds (170 kg). Ease of use is enhanced with two buttons on the tailgate handle that allow convenient inner gate release.

This multifunctional tailgate offers proven strength and durability, having undergone more testing and validation than any tailgate in GM’s history. Sierra is the first and only truck to offer the MultiPro Tailgate, providing premium truck customers the ultimate flexibility. MultiPro Tailgate will be standard on Denali and SLT.

Nice copy of Ford with the C-shaped headlight. Only, Ford did theirs much better!

And what the hell is the purpose of that trick tailgate?

I saw that and thought "oh, that's cool!" But then I thought, "what the hell would you use that for?" Something different just to be different?

Wtf are those wheel openings?

Uglier than hell is what those are. Geez!

Interesting tailgate. Unnecessarily complicated though. More to break. But hey, it's a GMC. It'll be a suit pants pickup anyway.

Went from squircle wheel wells to that??

Lastly, I want to see them take all day dropping the toolbox with a sharp corner into the bed. I'm betting carbon fiber will still rip.

Seeing that video, the 'load stop' on the tailgate looks pretty cool.

It actually does have a few cool features to it. That load stop feature strikes me as more of a "hey look, it can do this too" rather than a primary feature (a result of it being the step when folded down, it can also flip up when open), but still a useful idea, as long as said item doesn't stack above where it stops.....at that point, you'd need a normal bed extender.

Very impressive. Sierra Denali and SLT are true luxury vehicles. Wealthy people who buy sedans and crossovers from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Lexus, etc. will love the new 2019 Sierras.

Lol. Why are they true luxury vehicles? And why will all those buyers love it?

Lol, so much hate...again. GMC now brings more luxury buyers then Cadillac and lures Benz/BMW buyers who want an SUV which why the Germans are trying to catch up with big SUVs on their own. I hope GMC installs a S/C v8 and v6 in the Denali Sierra/Canyon to separate it more from Chevy.

Why are they true luxury vehicles? And why will all those buyers love it?

Price, features, and prestige make the highline GMC Sierras true luxury vehicles. These reasons are also why they will appeal to owners of sedans and crossovers from the leading luxury auto brands. Premium LD full size pickups in general can easily match or surpass the cost of luxury sedans like Mercedes-Benz E400 and Jaguar XF 3.5t, and the trucks offer similar amenities. Plus, expensive pickup trucks are big time status symbols nowadays. All the manufacturers of these trucks are targeting wealthy people living in large metropolitan areas. These customers may not ever tow anything or carry heavy loads with these trucks, but instead they use them for commuting and family travel. When GMC uses the phrase "Professional Grade" for their target audience, they're not referring to farmers, ranchers, or carpenters!

Sierra Denali has been the benchmark for the premium pickup truck segment since it came out in 2001. The 2019 version sets the bar even higher.
