Lincoln News! I have 3 big scoops from my source at NAIAS this past weekend!

Recommended Posts

1. Lincoln Aviator Concept will be at NYIAS with the production model coming sooner than NYIAS 2019.

2. The mid-cycle refresh of the Continental will have suicide doors!!!! This was a shocker to me but he assured me this was being worked on as we speak...

3. Ford has relinquished the current Mustang platform to Lincoln for them to do with as they wish... Mark X anyone? As all MK names disappear by 2020.

1. Ford/Lincoln need this to be true.

2. Im skeptical that suicide doors could appear on the refreshed Continental...it would make more sense on a redesigned Continental.

3. Ive semi-predicted before that the MKZ replacement would have sedan, coupe, and possibly convertible models, be R/AWD...and be called Mark IX.

1. So we'll the Aviator "concept" in 2 months. Interesting! I hope they really push the envelope on Aviator. I would like to see both gas and hybrid options that are class leading.

2. Not sure how I feel about suicide doors on modern cars.

3. This makes sense and his been discussed for a long time. My only wish is that they would start with a new platform (S650). Although rumors are that has been cancelled. We'll see though. Lincoln could use a shared platform Grand Tourer. I would say one that can pamper but still have the chops for serious performance. These would not be M, V, or AMG like performance because it doesn't need to be. Nobody will tracking a Lincoln. I would bet hybrid and ecoboost v-6 options. Exciting times.

1) This was confirmed when they showed both MKC and Nautilus at LA. Otherwise they'd have split the debuts at separate shows.

2) I highly doubt this for a refresh. I could see it on the next-gen model with it pushing further upmarket on CD6, but not for a refresh. Are you sure the source wasn't referring to the redesign? I do wonder, though, will we see more of the recent minor interior refresh, or could it get a more Navigator-inspired dash?

3) I was told a year or so ago by a dealer source that work was being done on a Lincoln coupe of some sort, and the timing of that tidbit makes sense with this tidbit talking about the current platform. But with the platform realignment, it wouldn't surprise me if, as PD said, that it was pushed back to go on CD6 along with the rest of the stable.

Wrong forum.

FORD MOTOR COMPANY DISCUSSION.

Last time I checked, Lincoln was part of FMC.

Funny. I thought it was part of the a Lincoln Motor Company. There's a dedicated forum for it.

There's a dedicated forum for Edge news. Guess we should move those posts there. There's a dedicated forum for F-150 news, guess we should move those there.

Ford owns Lincoln, Lincoln Motor Company, etc. It's part of FMC.

If you don't want to read it, don't open it, problem solved.

I'll stop there, further discussion is pointless and there's no need to further hijack the thread.

I'm with you Pioneer....wrong forum. Yes, Lincoln is part of Ford Motor Company, but it is considered to be its own company and as such, I respect the effort by expecting Lincoln related news to appear in the Lincoln thread...but with that being said, I sincerely hope that hbalek's sources are credible and we see further developments that indeed move Lincoln further apart from her lesser cousins...

I won't even know it exists if it's posted in the correct forum. I don't go to the Lincoln forum for a reason, and this thread proves everything I've ever said about it. Lincoln is a leach. A parasite to the Ford Motor Company. You, by your very post defending why Lincoln news has to be posted in a non-Lincoln forum, have proven that if it's not posted in the Ford forum, it's not viable enough to stand on it's own. Just like Lincoln itself.

Suicide door presents many problems from a crash safety standpoint. It's virtually impossible to retrofit it on an existing vehicle and still pass the crash test. Too much of the safety cell structure will have to be modified and strengthened and all that work means lots of money. In general, doors shapes and B-pillar are the last things you want to change on a mid cycle update. Every other non-structure load bearing body panels (trunk, hood, fenders) are pretty much fair game.

Lincoln may be thinking about doing suicide doors on a new vehicle but it's almost certain that it will not be on a facelift CD4 Continental.

The hard points are completely wrong on the back of the door for suicide doors. It would require a custom hinge to do with the way the back of the door curves.

The negative PR when some kid dies because they open the door at speed and it flys open or they open it when a car passes when park and it slams closed and kills them would not be worth the cost. They are called Suicide doors for a reason.

The Continental has electronic door mechanisms currently, so if one hits the electronic button to open the door while moving it won’t do so. I’d imagine if they returned to coach doors they’d still use this electronic electric doors like they do now.

And Cadillac why back in 1957-58 used a mechanical latch to prevent the rear coach doors opening at speed on their flagship Fleetwood Brougham. I don’t recall if the 1960’s Continental used anything to prevent an exit at speed but if not, there doesn’t seem to be any horror stories out there...certainly Ralph Nadder would have brought those to light if so! Lol
