Can the Ford Ranger crash Chevy's small truck party?

"It's really just not about growth and the segment size itself; it's about some of the dynamics that are happening within full-size," Todd Eckert, Ford's truck marketing manager, told reporters this month. "As transaction prices continue to grow, we see more of an opportunity than we did, say, five years ago, to bring in a midsize pickup ... and really get to that entry-level buyer, who's a very different customer."

"Ford is late to the party," Michelle Krebs, senior analyst for Autotrader, said in an interview. "The question is: Is there room for yet another entry, or has the growth in that segment peaked? It's quite possible that it has."

. For anyone that wonders why I dont believe them when they say there wont be job losses, its this right here.

I think Fuzzy said that Ford is targeting 125,000 Rangers a year. First year on the market, they should do this easy, I suspect there will be a built-up demand for this vehicle. After year one, I don’t know.

Still, I’m glad they’re in this segment. I’ve either owned or leased a Ranger from 1983 until 2005 (drove it in the job). I’m very interested in the new Ranger and will be looking closely at it in 2019. Not everybody needs or wants a full-size pickup.

I hope it sells like hotcakes. Wife commented last night that she'd look into leasing one when her Escape goes back.

Personally, as much as I'd like to have a truck the Ranger size for myself, I'd go with an F150 because of all the features Ranger is going to lack.

It'll fit in mine, but if given the choice of fitting in the garage and losing all the stuff I want, it can sit in the driveway.

As of right now a Ranger lariat has everything I want.

Technically I could get the 150 in my garage but I wouldnt be able to fit a second car in because of where the garage sits in relation to the house. Its hard enough to fit 2 Focuses in there and be able to use doors on both sides. I wouldnt be able to park the truck straight enough to squeeze the other car in there. Street parking is out of the question since our neighbors across from us have about 40 cars, only 3 of which are capable of moving without a tow truck and theyre all parked on the street. Once I blow out one of the cabinets and move the work bench over the garage should be more functional.

What features do you think it wont have that the f150 will?

Id really like the 360 camera on the ranger but Im pretty sure it wont have it. I believe its only on the top level trims on the f150 so I couldnt get it anyways on that lol. Cant think of much else.

Everything a Lariat 502A has. Moonroof, dual climate, heated/cooled seats, leather dash, memory seats/mirrors/heated steering wheel. I don't see anything in the press photos that even hint at stuff like that.

i found this interesting,

I'm sorry but this sounds like face saving spin, I remember Derrick Kuzak hosing down T6 Ranger as unnecessary

because it was 7/8 the size of F150 - the large size made it too close to F150 in Ford's opinion back then.

It would seem that the lure of higher ATP has been proven by GM's Colorado and its rich product mix consisting

mostly of Crew Cab V6. It looks to me as though Ford realized that they were looking at Ranger the wrong way,

too big for the Ranger they wanted but perfect as a new era Sport Trac replacement...

Thinking about Ranger sales prediction, 125K sales is approximately 10,000 trucks a month, that would be

impressive for a product in its first 12 months and perhaps the Foot hold Ford needs to justify more models

like Raptor, a V6 or a diesel and Pioneer's Lariat top trim and options.

I figure it will take Ford 12 months to work out what real world Ranger buyers want exactly in terms of those

trims and engine choices but don't be surprised to see Ford double back and offer more..

I checked out the 2018 ranger brochure from New Zealand and you are right, I didnt see a moonroof, heated steering wheel or memory anything. It did have dual climate control and heated seats(not cooled). I would think we would get what the 2018 has available interior wise since they are identical but I could be wrong.

I think the 2019 lariat had a leather dash. If you look at the pics, you can see the contrast stitching on it.

I think the ATP comment may be intended differently than you are interpreting it. I think he's saying the F-150's ATP is marching upwards, which is great for that model's profitability less good for the lower end where buyers want a truck with good features that doesn't rise above $40K (and far beyond) so quickly. When Ford killed the old Ranger that segment seemed to be contractors and other "bare truck" buyers more than happy with a cheap and content-light F-150. Now they may be seeing that the segment today would rather have a complete package in a more affordable smaller truck than less goodies in a bigger one.

I understand and recognize that the price gap that has emerged below F150 has created product space for the Ranger,

even back in 2011, F150 sales favored a richer product mix - 70% Crew cabs, 20% Super Cabs with very few work trucks

at the bottom end being sold.

My point is that the sales gap existed for longer than Ford wanted to admit and actually strengthened / accentuated as the

truck sales recovered away from 2009. Ford under Mulally just took the easy option of stopping Ranger, BOF Explorer

and BOF Sport Trac to simplify its business with more focus on recurring savings than growth from profitable sales.

I get that, I really do but it's such a shame that Ranger and a companion SUV didn't go into Michigan Truck in 2011/2012.
