Wonder why they are limiting the 2 door model?

They are only limiting it on the Sahara. I was reading the take rate for a 2 door Sahara was reeeeaaaalllyyy low. They are positioning the Sahara as the high-end most livable as a daily driver model which most non-off-roaders / mall crawlers would want. As a matter of fact the new all-time 4WD will only be an option on the Sahara so those drivers that want some modern amenities wont have to figure out when to pull the 4WD handle (which, believe it or not was a complaint for some who bought it as a statement vehicle and not for the capabilities). A power folding soft-top will even be an option.

 

For the Sport and Rubicon, the 2 door will still be there.

 

Jeep is being smart on this. They are keeping the capabilities while making it more livable. They also have expanded the offerings so making it a true one car household vehicle is more bearable. Exactly where we were hoping Ford would go with the Bronco.

I agree with your comments. I suspect they are trying to antipate what Ford is planning to do and circumvent them. I don't think the Bronco will outsell the Wrangler but I do think it has the opportunity to be a legit competitor.

 

I hope Ford is paying attention to what Jeep is forecasting, in respect to its emphasis on 4-door models. I don't think Ford would be that stupid to not include one, but I think the message from Jeep is pretty clear.

 

We will be good to go if the new Bronco has a removable top.

I give the Bronco roughly less then a 50/50 chance of having a 2 door model. I'm not sure Ford could recoup the cost of additional stampings to make it cost effective.

 

I think the biggest issue the Bronco might have is that it might be "too refined" for hitting the market where the Wrangler is at. Should be interesting how Ford threads that needle..

I think there is enough volume to support a 2 door at launch and they really need it for historical reasons. If demand isn't there after the first 2-3 years they can kill it.

 

Launching a new Bronco without a 2 door option would be a huge mistake from a PR standpoint.

Note to Ford:

 

Step 1.) Copy list

 

Step 2.) Apply to Bronco

 

Step 3.) Sit back and collect truckloads of cash

 

That sounds an awful lot like the GM playbook:

 

1) Import Opels

2) ???

3) Profit!!!!!!!!!!

I do. It wouldn't survive without a 4-door model. You could maybe get decent sales the first year or two of 2-door model, but beyond that, it wouldn't do well.

For me, I want it to be more on the refined side to be interested. As long as they offer both a "standard" version and a "luxed up" version, that should be fine.

I know you're joking, but there's a difference between copying your competition and understanding your competition and doing something better than them. I Think that Ford is pretty good about not just copying the competition, and the fact that the Bronco does have a good history helps it not be a blatant copy.

 

I also concur that the Bronco will not be successful in the long term if it does not have a 4 door model as I'm one of those people that I am not interested in a two door model because of the practicality of it. This is the same reason I did not buy the Raptor when it first came out, because an extended cab wasn't sufficient for our family.

 

Regarding your concern about the refinement of the upcoming Bronco, I think that Raptor is a great example of Ford's ability to incorporate legitimate off-road characteristics with great refinement. I think the F150 interior is excellent with the exception of maybe a few hard plastics that should be dealt with, but it feels nicer than some luxury cars I've been in. As far as the on-road ride is concerned the truck rides and handles better than a standard F150. It's well known what it's off-road capabilities are so there's no need to go into that. Although maybe we should because motor trend doesn't think they're very good apparently, LOL.

I too wouldn't be interested in a 2-door model. Depending on how it turns out, it's on the short list for a next vehicle (hopefully the Flex lasts....it's been having starting issues lately....cranks for a while before starting up, but the dealer wouldn't do anything 'because it starts' and you know it'll go right after the extended warranty ends).

 

That's true. My dad loves his Raptor, and they did a good job of it being nice, yet still more on the practical/utilitarian side. So Bronco will probably skew that way too in general. It won't be hard to out-class the Wrangler on that front, though we haven't seen the new one yet.
