Fgts
Apparently the main factory that makes Lacrosse,Malibu, Impala, Volt, Sonic and CT6 is to be converted to make more profitable CUVs. IMO the only vehicles on this list endanger is the Volt and it's little backseat and Sonic's underutilized factory. The rest would get shuffle as many of the named cars are shared with the CUVs. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-gm-jobs-idUSKBN1A52PJ?il=
rmc523
CT6 isn't going anywhere. Instead, ATS and CTS will be re-combined into a single vehicle.

silvrsvt
Sounds like this isn't going to happen anytime soon...they are looking at post 2020 for any major changes.
Fgts
Looks like the usual "hard ball" being played between GM ( we'll pay you this much) and UAW ( more money now!). The Impala in it's current form would be dropped or/and replaced by a Alpha or Omega based car, the Lacrosse can easily be built in Kansas City with Malibu. MY93SHO
"The CT6 is one of six GM cars that Reuters reports could get dropped by 2020 after this major sales slump, which had GM’s U.S. inventories at a 10-year high in June." "The other cars on the line are the Chevrolet Volt hybrid, Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Impala and Chevrolet Sonic, according to unnamed sources cited by Reuters. The report said GM is currently reviewing whether to cancel the cars, but didn’t give any sort of timeline of when we’ll know anything." http://jalopnik.com/the-cadillac-ct6-is-at-risk-already-1797128320 Edited July 21, 2017 by MY93SHO
jpd80
I think the breadth and speed of change has caught GM, Ford and FCA by surprise as all their cars take falls in sales. GM being more expansive across more plants is no doubt feeling the loss of sales more than most. There's no choice in this, we're going to see car production either end or consolidated into fewer plants....or do like Ford and just import Focus. ehaase
I expect the Impala, Sonic, and Spark to be dropped, but production of the Cadillac and Buick sedans to be moved to China, where they are popular. No sense building low volume prestige cars in two plants.
jpd80
The other possibility is to abandon the vanity of premium platforms and broaden the use of Alpha and Omega in Chevrolet and Buick as a new generation of premium sedans that deliver both value and superior driving experience. bzcat
This all pretty much make sense given what we know about the market shift towards CUVs. Sonic: It made no sense to build this in the US to begin with due to it being such a low volume and low margin car. Better to move it to Mexico or import it from Korea again like the previous gen Aveo. China is also an option for GM if it wants to keep offering the Sonic subcompact. Volt: Making it more like a CUV instead of hatchback? It's like they are reading Ford's product plan or something. Impala: I'm sure this is the end of the road after ther current gen is done. Lacrosse: GM will make another one but it could be imported from China. ATS/CTS: Combine into one single replacement CT6: GM will probably import the next gen from China.
jpd80
Last month, Lordstown and Grand River were down to barely one shift's production , a sure sign that slowing sales and rising inventory is biting hard at GM. Newer fresh product is no guarantee that products will survive.. I cannot believe that GM has two plants making Cruze and a plant dedicated to Alpha when sales are now so low. tbone
CT6: GM will probably import the next gen from China. What is the point of buying a CT6 made in China? For me, If I'm buying a Caddy, I would be buying an American luxury vehicle. If it's made in China, you absolutely remove my incentive to buy one. I personally think that would be a really poor decision by GM.

So you are saying the only reason you buy domestic vehicles is because they're domestic? Do you think most people are like you? I buy what I like. That what I like is usually domestic is a bonus. tbone
Not exactly, considering I would buy a Canadian or Mexican built vehicle. But, yes I do try to buy domestic made vehicles first if the appeal to me. Unfortunately most people do not take that stance, so no, most people are not like me. You clearly haven't seen any of my other posts regarding Chinese built cars. Go back through and you will get an understanding of why I won't buy them. Fgts
No, I have read all of them. I'd rather not see Chinese built cars on our roads either, but the average CT6 buyer isn't going to know, or even care. That's the thinking that got them in trouble ("durr buyers won't care if it's fwd/rwd" or "they don't care if the car is a disguised Chevy), all the perceived "savings" they get from one bonehead decision to another cost them (and the other Detroit competition) big in the long run because of short-term "make Wall Street great again" thinking. I wouldn't touch an Chinese S-Class or 7-Series neither would their buyers because of long-term damage and smaller sustainability profits. Will all this China-this and that let's just ship all production to China and we can make white flags for surrender for tender. With that said let's see what comes out of this because I doubt GM would drop or/export production of that many vehicles at one time. You think most Envision owners realize their car was made in China? You think most BMW SUV owners realize their vehicles were make in South Carolina? The reality is, as long as quality is up to snuff, most buyers would have no clue where their vehicle as made.

You mightn't touch Chinese built cars but given the popularity of Walmart, I'm betting a lot of buyers would... Most luxury cars are bought on two year or three year leases so I doubt the majority of buyers would care, it was the same argument when automakers set up in Mexico, so China is just edging further away...... PS, I hate it too but it's the way of our very disposable society... Edited July 24, 2017 by jpd80
jasonj80
China is also the largest auto market in the world and is growing, you are going to see more and more cars that are designed for China first and then made to work elsewhere.GM is the largest importer of Chinese Cars into North America. bzcat
China is also the largest auto market in the world and is growing, you are going to see more and more cars that are designed for China first and then made to work elsewhere. GM is the largest importer of Chinese Cars into North America. While Ford is the largest exporter of American cars to China. BMW and Mercedes export more American build cars to China. But Ford is the most active exporter to China from the Big 3. Ford currently offers Explorer, Mustang, MKC, MKZ, and MKX in China as regular sales models. MKX is imported from Canada but the rest come from US plants. Ford also offers F150 Raptor and Navigator on special order. Part of the reason is the fact that Ford doesn't have as much production capacity in China as GM for example... it doesn't have the capacity to offer a full line of a second brand of locally assembled vehicles since it had to give away roughly 40% of the capacity to Mazda during the divorce. Prior to the Mazda divorce, the Mazda brand was effectively controlled by Ford in China and so it was Ford's second brand there (e.g. think Hyundai/Kia, Chevy/Buick, SAIC VW/FAW VW, GAIC Honda/Dongfeng Honda, Pegueot/Citroen etc, and Ford/Mazda). So that set Ford back at least 5 years in terms of where it would have been in China. GM offers Camaro, Colorado, Silverado, and Escalade as special order models in China. There are no regular sales GM model from the US or Canada, mainly because it has the capacity to carry 5 full line of locally assembled vehicles: Wuling, Baojun, Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac. FCA offers Grand Cherokee as regular sales model in China. Edited July 25, 2017 by bzcat
