Chevy pokes a hole in Ford's truck, again

Chevy released a new commercial that turns up the heat by also calling into question some of Ford's performance claims for the Super Duty. In the spot, former football star Howie Long and Eric Stanczak, chief engineer, full-size trucks at General Motors, have the following exchange before the toolbox drop:

Long: "You hear after our toolbox test where the F-150 aluminum bed got punctured, they've now beefed up the bed of their new Super Duty?"

Stanczak: "Oh, yeah? Let's test it."

Long: "Is that the same toolbox they used in the steel vs. aluminum bed test commercial?"

Stanczak: "That's correct."

Long: "Totally empty?"

Stanczak: "Yup."

Long: "Nothing in there?"

Stanczak: "You got it. You ready?"

Stanczak then places the red metal toolbox on the side of the bed and shoves it off, gashing a hole in the Super Duty bed.

Long: "They made the aluminum bed of the Super Duty 30 percent stronger, and thetoolbox still punctured the bed."

Doubling down, nice! Usually a good sign of desperation. Who are they really going after with these commercials? No current Ford owner is going to look at that commercial think, "you know what, I think I'm gonna buy a Chevy instead." Not to mention, most people will be skeptical of these commercials anyway.

I thought the NG GM twins were supposed to be 2019 models out in about a year?

Ok, it's still 12 months away and the tide is already going out on GM's truck sales.

(The time kind snuck up on me there)

I'd like to see how NG Silverrera stacks up against F-150 and NG RAM before I go making statements like that.

You mean how those NG models stack up against a, at minimum, four year old truck? Ford should only be one to two years away from a new model at that point, which means they will be well positioned to respond to anything the other two brands throw at them. The current model is already far ahead of them in many ways, that their NG models may only catch up. Time will tell.

So GM should stop making trucks because of this?, like saying Ford should stop making the GT because the Vette matches it for hundreds-of-thousands less.

PD said in another thread that F-Series will be getting more aggressive with the updates.

Where did I say that?

I was referring to Ford's ability to take on competition in the truck game, and maintain a leadership position.

GM's HT Steel makeover is running out of legs, the NG trucks can't get here fast enough

and the next 12 months is going to be all uphill for GM selling Silverado and Sierra.

Ford on the other hand will just get stronger and stronger now that the SD is switched.

The one bright spark will be the availability of the 10-speed auto, I don't think that there's

enough wow in that alone to encourage more than a slight uptick in sales..
