Tesla will build the world’s largest lithium ion battery to keep the lights on in South Australia

Telsa will build the world’s largest lithium ion battery for South Australia under a historic agreement between French renewable energy provider Neoen, the South Australian government, and Elon Musk’s company.

The partnership is the result of a bet taken by Tesla’s founder and CEO, Musk, in March, in which he said Tesla could deliver an operational battery-powered energy system to the state that would prevent blackouts within 100 days, or it would be free.

That wager still stands and the start of the 100 days will be marked once the grid interconnection agreement has been signed.

The 100MW/129MWh battery from Tesla, paired with Neoen’s Hornsdale wind farm, 230km north of the capital, Adelaide, will put South Australia at the forefront of global energy storage technology.

A big challenge by Musk for Tesla to supply the battery within 100 days of the signing of the grid interconnection agreement.

This will be the first major use of a large Li-Ion Battery to store energy from a solar farm to allow supply when the wind doesn't blow

I wonder if this is the beginning of renewable energy taking over more of the base load market....

The funniest part about South Australia's black out problems was that a severe storm blew over key HT power lines

so there was no way that power could be transmitted even if it had sufficient capacity to do so..

The power supplied by the wind farm and Tesla's battery storage is a small fraction of the power

delivered to the state by coal fired thermal stations, a fair portion is supplied from another state,

Victoria.

So the issue is sufficient guaranteed base load supply, not more renewable fringe projects.

Efficient gas fired power plants would go a long way towards fixing the problem right now....
