Thinking of selling my 2017 MKZ

Recommended Posts

I thought I would start a different thread about my overall experience so far with my 2017 MKZ. Since I bought my MKZ with 35k (CPO) in March I have had a myriad of issues. It has become clear the dealer that sold it to me did little to no 200 point inspection and probably just certified it with no sort of check at all. I am guessing they slapped new tires on it and called it a day. I have taken it to the dealership three times for different issues, with little success of resolving the issues. My time is a precious commodity right now and going to the dealership every other week doesn't sound like something I want to do going forward. I am seriously thinking cutting my losses and moving on.

My list of issues are as follows:

1. Water gurgling sounds in dash: I have taken it to the dealer twice for this and they said it was normal for the car (after explaining to Ford Engineering). I am going to escalate to Lincoln customer support (concierge?) because this is really annoying and shouldn't be considered normal. I may try burping the cooling system the old fashioned way to see if that gets rid of the air.

2. Flapping/Rattling/Grinding noise from right front area: I took to dealer and apparently some of the undercarriage covering had become loose and was rattling around. Apparently there were some fasteners loose and missing, which they replaced. That resolved that issue.

3. Rattling/Wind noise coming from the rear seat area: This is similar to #2. Undercarriage coverings were loose and missing fasteners. These were replaced and it fixed this issue.

4. Vibration/jittery from what appears to be right front area: I took it to the dealership for this. I thought it was a bent rim/out of balance tire because it kinda had that feeling. Dealer re-balanced tire but I still get a shaky vibration, it gets more noticeable around 40-50 and anything above 70mph. Once over 70 it gets really noticeable. Not very confidence inspiring on the highway.

5. Howling noise: I mentioned it to the dealer but I think they thought they resolved it with #2. At a steady 40 MPH and over 70 MPH, a low pitched howling noise (this could be related to #4). Getting into the 80's it becomes louder. It seems to becoming from the right front area. Which makes think that the vibration sound issues are due to something either loose, broken, or bent in the suspension up in the passenger front. Could a broken or loose engine mount cause this vibration?

6. Poor MPG: Really this is city only but getting around 13-15 mpg in city driving. Mentioned it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong. They did say that my tires were under inflated and recommended I keep them at 38 PSI. I averaged 26.5 on the highway going 75 mph on a 4 hour trip a couple weeks ago.

I have accepted that I will take a loss of some sort if I trade it in. However, going back and fourth with the dealer (whom is just servicing the car, didn't sell it to me) to fix these issues is getting old real fast. What is making this even more difficult is that Ford is blowing out Fusions in my area with 1350 cash on the hood with 0% for 72 plus my Z plan. It a huge difference in Fusion vs MKZ in what you get (a lot more than the old days) but a new Fusion Titanium 2.0 with a proven engine and less headaches (plus 0 interest vs. my 1.9%) is starting to sound appealing.

I have delayed any sort upgrades that I wanted to do (window tint, intake, tune, and maybe exhaust) because of these issues. Appreciate any thoughts from folks on this, especially with #4 and #5.

I'm sorry to hear this. Noises and rattles drive me insane, just ask my wife and kids, lol. Doesn't the CPO program afford you some service benefits like picking up the car from you for service, service loaner, etc?

I'm not entirely sure. I am going to inquire about that with the Lincoln Owner Concierge (support). I think I might be entitled to the pick up. Although, in this instance I most likely would be better served dropping it off. Somehow, I can only duplicate the problems. I had to do the with the water/gurgling noise. First time they said they couldn't duplicate. I dropped by and took them for a ride. By the end of the ride they knew exactly what I was talking about. Video helps too but it's hard to safely take video/audio while driving by yourself.

Nothing pisses me off more than "Could not duplicate." It's funny how I can duplicate it every time but they never seem to be able to figure it out without me going along for a ride to point it out.

I hear you man. It just screams laziness on the tech's part. I have a feeling I'm about to go down that road here soon. My focus is making a noise in the front suspension it shouldn't be making with 17k on the clock.

That would have been red flag numero uno for me....

That I bought a used car? or that it had that many miles on it?

The car was a Ford fleet car. I am not sure if it was a test car or part of executive fleet. It may have been beat on but from everything I've been told, it was most likely properly maintained by techs and engineers since it was a new model. I just think the dealer was lazy and didn't do any sort of inspection. The thing that sucks the most is the time wasted. I have no doubt this car can be fixed but it shouldn't have to have been this way.

Too many miles for the model year....

I never understood that rationale of , "too many miles for one year". Maybe if I continued at that pace but I'm not. If anything putting that many miles on a car in a year should mean a decent amount of highway driving, which should be less stress on the car. A dealer said that to me and I laughed. I didn't know if you drove a car a lot in the first year, you ruin the car. My thought is if you take care of your car it should last a lot of miles, no matter how fast or slow you put those miles on. I probably will put 10k on the car in my first year of ownership. So next year it will have 45k and at year 3 probably 55k (etc).

I wonder if the car was in an accident with so much of the lower shielding pulled loose? Perhaps 4 & 5 are related to #6?

Clean car fax and technically if the car looked like it was in an accident, it shouldn't of been certified (according to Lincoln). I don't think it was in accident since it was a Ford car prior to being auctioned. I would think that they wouldn't allow it to be certified if they knew it was in an accident. I really think the dealer either just bought and slapped the certification on it without doing an inspection or fix, or certified it and let the employees drive and beat on it, which may have damaged some things. I'll never know but I will steer folks from that dealer, if asked (PM if you want to know).

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, folks this saga has ended. I ended up selling the MKZ today. It really was a tough choice but I decided to cut my losses. There were just too many things wrong for me to keep up. The more research I did on these problems, the more I found more people with these issues (mostly in Fusion Sport forums). If I didn't have a son with a lot of health issues and a new co parenting situation with his mother, I may have been more patient to work on getting all of these issues solved. However, my time is precious commodity now. I barely have time to sleep and go to work, much less worry about issues and dealer visits. I did take a decent kick to the nuts as far as a loss goes (but saved 2k in interest charges). I never thought I would say it but my time is worth more than the loss I took.

After much thought and consideration, I traded it in for a 2017 2.0 AWD Fusion. I noticed a lot of the problems being reported about the Fusion and MKZ for 2017, most issues were with 2.7/3.0 models. I almost went with a nicely equipped Escape but decided against it. For the most part, the 2.0 AWD Fusion is a known product. I know they moved to the enhanced 2.0 with 2017 (along with the 2016 Edge) but I didn't find much negative as far as the engine goes. I know there is always a risk that any new car will have issues but felt comfortable enough with this choice based on my research. I will miss the better ride, features, and looks (oh and the 400 HP) but hopefully I will have a reliable car that will last a long time.
