Remember that time the Dodge Stratus beat the Mustang GT in a comparison test?

and where is the Dodge Stratos now..

We didn't invite the Stratus-twin Chrysler Sebring, or the walking-dead Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird,

since their contracts won't be renewed for 2003, and then learned that another apparently eligible contender

the two-door version of the Pontiac Grand Prix — had also been consigned to history.

My daughter has a 2003 V-6 car. It has 217,000 miles and is still in pretty good shape (she drives it daily). I wonder how many Stratus' R/T and Monte Carlos there are running around with those miles and still feels solid?

In the summer of 2000 I rented a V-6 convertible and drove from Pennsylvania to Minnesota (and back) for my brother's wedding.

It was a solid, comfortable car with reasonable performance for regular driving. Regardless of how it looked, I could have lived with that car on a daily basis. I would not say that about a Stratus coupe, let alone one of the final-generation F-bodies. I rode in a friend's 1997 V-6 Camaro from Harrisburg to Allentown and back, and just that relatively short trip was terrible from a comfort standpoint.

did Dodge buy lots of ad space that month?

No sir. In the September 2002 issue of Car and Driver, Dodge has only one small advertisement. It is not for Stratus Coupe or any of its other cars though. Page 139 has a 1/3 size ad for Dodge Skip Barber Driving School. Chevy advertised Monte Carlo on page 33. This ad is for Monte Carlo 400 Rematch Sweepstakes with Looney Tunes. Ford did not advertise Mustang in this issue. There is a full page ad for Mitsubishi Eclipse, which shares some parts with Dodge Stratus Coupe, on page 102.

In this comparison, 1 point separated third and second place. 5 points separated second and first. In 2002, Dodge Stratus Coupe was a much more modern car than Monte Carlo and Mustang GT.

While I admire the time you took viewing and counting the ads in the issue....
