Anthony
Link to Full Article on Automobilemag.com Ford is taking its world car concept to the next level with the latest version of its C-segment platform, which is expected to be ready by 2020. Under development in Cologne, this will be, according to Ford Europe VP of Quality Gunnar Herrmann, the last conventional components set for Dearborns old world arm. Since the advanced matrix must also eventually be capable enough to accommodate autonomous driving and electric propulsion systems on all five continents, flexibility will be key. (Ford expects BEVs and PHEVs to secure a 30-percent share of the global market between 2025 and 2030.) Thats why classic dimensional constraints no longer apply. The new platforms extended scalability will enable Ford to more easily bridge different vehicle categories. Its also being designed to better incorporate elements including battery cooling systems and advanced electronics, and to further optimize overall packaging and crash performance. bzcat
Sounds like Ford's version of MQB or TGNA.
transitman
That didn't divulge much, but I guess it's a start.
jpd80
And it also confirms to me that the next new model to be built at Hermosllo will be a heavy MCE to get Ford to 2020 and the all new C Platform.
rmc523
I don't think the timeline is correct. A heavy mce doesn't make sense, as we've seen the new Focus is longer/wider. Plus 2018s are coming out in a few months. You're saying they'd completely retool (again, mules we've seen indicate completely different everything) to just switch it again to a new platform in a year? Harley Lover
Will the Model E sit on this chassis, or be separate?
jpd80
Sounds like Model E is something completely different.
630land
2020 Model year is not as far away as it seems. One year from now, there will be early '19 models for sale. Jan. 2019 is almost a year and half away, when some new '20 models unveiled at Detroit Auto Show. Mk 3 Focus came first in 2011 for '12 MY, current Escape was introduced fall 2012. I'm betting the next Escape will be 2020 MY. Edited May 1, 2017 by 630land
jpd80
Next Gen Focus is not 2020 Year Model, it 's a 2021 year model because that article was talking about the year 2020 which means it's just under three years away and long enough for one more MCE on this platform. MKII
IMO, the article is talking about a "Concept Car" based on the next C-segment platform, not the MK4 Focus.
630land
I'll believe anything when it's from Ford press release or Automotive News trade publication, even Detroit News. Car rags/blogs post speculations as click bait. 2021? Really? Edited May 2, 2017 by 630land

The Lincoln Focus may be 2021 model year. Edited May 2, 2017 by bzcat

fuzzymoomoo
Let's not forget that the NA focus moves to Hermosillo next year. It would stand to reason it would be an all new model and not another MCE because of the investment involved.

fuzzymoomoo
And before that was scheduled to move to that new plant in Mexico as well. They're not moving production and then doing just a refresh. Exactly. But then again there's a lot that the company is doing lately that makes less and less sense.

I mean, mules show a completely different body and proportions, so I'd say it's fairly certain it'll be all new.
jpd80
Of the new one? Before it's been revealed? No, they moved the current Focus to a new plant in China, that tells me that the next Focus in 2018 is an MCE on the current platform As for the larger Focus mule, I wonder if Escort is getting a hatchback version.... I don't follow the logic oo assumption that every mule is a new platform, i like to take counterpoint of what if this is an easy extension of something already in play... everyone is just assuming that the larger Mule has to be a new platform, from what we know of Ford, "new platform" can be whatever they decide. as in MKC.. IMO It would be stupid to have the Model E or whatever they are calling it separate from the Focus platform, since they completely overlap one another. Going by plant and rumor announcements, the Model E CUV will be a 2020 Launch (2019CY) and the next Gen Focus will launch in next year. That would line up with the Focus moving to Mexico and Flat Rock hiring 800 more people in 2018.
