Ford and Magna team up on a carbon fiber subframe

Recommended Posts

Interesting story. Sounds like they are at the testing phase already.

Definitely interesting.....I remember reading reports a while back saying Ford has been working on ways to mass produce carbon fiber parts, I'm guessing this seems to be part of it.

The BIG issue will be crash testing ! It will not perform anything like steel. It also could be very difficult to model for computer simulations.

Many supercars already use carbon fiber frames, no? And they've passed tests and are on the road....or are they mostly carbon fiber tubs with metal front/rear structures?

Would the carbon fiber just shatter instead of bending like metal?

Wiz, it's already is use at BMW for chassis: http://autoweek.com/article/car-news/carbon-core-2016-bmw-7-series-gets-carbon-fiber-implants

Not to mention the i3.

It's one thing to use this on expensive BMW's, it will be interesting to see how it could work on a mass market Ford. It's too bad Ford is not doing this in house versus with an outside supplier.

Well it helps offset the cost of developing it for both companies. Doing everything "in house" doesn't always make sense.
