Sevensecondsuv
"Smart Technology" I'm hoping that doesn't mean it's going to be loaded full of annoying nanny electronics. I'm sure drive by wire throttle is a foregone conclusion at this point, but I'm really hoping it has a shaft connecting the steering wheel to the steering gear without any provision for the nanny electronics to take over. I don't the aftermarket is going to embrace it as a true off-road option if the suspension and steering is full of electronics.
tbone
"Smart Technology" I'm hoping that doesn't mean it's going to be loaded full of annoying nanny electronics. Or if it does at least have a simple on-off switch for all of them. As for the aftermarket, if there's money to be made they will make the products.

Sevensecondsuv
EPAS is a given due to automatic parking, etc....sorry See - but that's just it...... Why does a serious off road rig that's supposedly gonna go head to head with Jeep need the automatic parking crap? That's just another gimmick, largely unwanted by the apparent target audience, that will only make it that much harder to modify for serious off-road use. These details are what will determine if Ford is actually serious about this new Bronco.
tbone
I'll be interested to see if it has auto park or not. If it's supposed to be a serious 4x4 I would think that option would be low on the list.
fuzzymoomoo
I see plenty of soccer moms driving Wranglers, so why not throw a package together to cater to that market?
silvrsvt
I see plenty of soccer moms driving Wranglers, so why not throw a package together to cater to that market? I wouldn't be the least bit suprised to see the next gen Wrangler get EPAS, if it doesn't have it already (it doesn't, just checked). It helps with gas mileage also. IMO a electric power assist vs a old school hydraulic one shouldn't hurt off road capabilities in anyway. It doesn't hurt the Raptor at all. Do keep in mind the Bronco will be more civilized than the Wrangler will be too
tbone
I think the Next Generation Jeep Wrangler is evolving. It will be interesting to see how it is received by the faithful. It will have the same general look but it is going away from the completely open top design to what rumors have it as removable roof panels, similar to what the new Bronco is suggested to have. I would consider this to be a major change, and could make them susceptible to a real challenge by the Bronco. It is looking like they are trying to add some civility to the Wrangler as well which I think takes it away from its roots. I guess their execution will be key. I'm looking forward to checking one out.
fuzzymoomoo
I don't think the Wrangler will have the panels for one simple reason. The way regulation has changed over the course of its lifetime, that is the only vehicle that is legally able to have the entire top removed because it's grandfathered under older regs. FCA is stupid, but not stupid enough to ruin that.
akirby
that is the only vehicle that is legally able to have the entire top removed because it's grandfathered under older regs How is a Wrangler with a roll cage less safe than a convertible with nothing?

fuzzymoomoo
How is a Wrangler with a roll cage less safe than a convertible with nothing? Don't know, but the way regulations have changed over the years, you can't make a new model with a removable top the way the Wrangler can, which is why the Renegade got panels and why Ford is looking into the panel system for the Bronco. This was told to me by an engineer familiar with the matter.

True, I forgot about that little caveat. That loophole must have been what changed then.
akirby
Looks like it has to do with the way the regulations are written and current exceptions. http://www.allpar.com/SUVs/jeep/wrangler/future/convertible.html

silvrsvt
Thanks government... for fucking shit up for no good reason You wouldn't be saying that when a family member is killed when your jeep gets T-boned and rolls over. I had a classmate in high school get killed that way...didn't help that he ran a stop sign (at 3-4AM) and didn't have a seatbelt on either, but you get the point.

There were some key factors that impacted the outcome of that accident. Nevertheless, it never makes the loss of life any easier and that was terribly unfortunate. Nevertheless, it never makes the loss of life any easier and that was terribly unfortunate. The point is that rollover crush improvements help save lives, thus why the Next Gen Wrangler and Bronco most likely won't have a completely open roof with a foldable front windshield like the current Wrangler does.
