Ford Bronco will ride again, says CEO Mark Fields at Detroit auto show

Ask Toyota how that worked for them.

The biggest issue in ROW markets was lack of a diesel option but yes, FJ flopped because it didn't fully capture people's imagination or IMO, the correct perception of what the original FJ40 was to many people.

The plan was good but execution was poor.

Ford could release it as a true 2-door and see how it sells. If it doesn't sell in the numbers they need then add a 4-door model. The crew cab wasn't available on the Raptor the first year either....

It wasn't until they released the crew cab Raptor that I could justify buying one. Build a 2-door Bronco and I will no longer be interested. I imagine there are more people out there like me than not. Just build both variants from the get go and be done with it. That way everyone will be happy.

CNet's Road Show: AutoComplete podcast just said that Dana revealed at an investor conference that they'll be supplying the front and rear axles for the Bronco, and that they'll be solid axles. That should put the last nail in the "softroader" naysayers' coffin.

I wish, but that's not how the internet works.

Ah but see, that article references the Autonews report that built on what Dana said about Advantech gears.

From original Autonews article:

In an investor presentation this month, Dana revealed that it had won the driveline work for the return of the Ford Bronco in 2020, along with the Ford Ranger in 2019. Dana confirmed that both vehicles will have “front and rear axles featuring our latest AdvanTEK gear technology.”

See, Dana did not actually say that the axles would be solid, that assumption was made by Autonews

because Jeep uses solid axles with Advantek, therefore Ranger/Bronco will too. Not necessarily so.

Dana currently supplies Ranger and Everest axles to Ford, it's not a big leap of faith that Ford

would upgrade those current Dana axles to the latest tech (lighter carries and stronger gears).

Gotta love the internet

Wrangler Uses Dana AdvanTECH axles

Wrangler has Solid Front and Rear Axles

Dana will supplying AdvanTECH axles to Ranger and Bronco

Ranger and Bronco will have Solid axles front and rear

See the fallacy?

It sold ok, but there was lots of different things going against it at the time like:

Poor visibility out the back do to keeping the styling like the concept

Gas prices spiking up to $4 a gallon

The Great Recession of 2008 (final nail in the coffin)

Plus reports of the subframes cracking on when you did serious off road work with it

Thats what killed it off
