Anthony
Thanks for this monthly report. It really shines puts a spotlight of what is going in the industry. Curious though, the way the monthly Brand days are calculated seems very odd. Using Dodge as an example...all the mainstream Dodge vehicles which sell in high number have very high inventory days (majority over 150 days each) whereas the Viper brings the entire brand average down to 98 days because it only has 49 days of inventory yet only sells 2 cars a day on average. Wouldn't a weighted calculation by number of sales per model vs days of inventory be more appropriate? Because in reality, Dodge has quite a bit more than 98 days of inventory based on actual sales of individual models. I added sales per day below for each model. I'm not even sure how that would be done...but especially in the case of Dodge, one niche model can skew the average way out of whack. Challenger ..................20,400 (129 Days) 158 cars per dayCharger .......................16,100 (162 Days) 99 cars per dayDart ..............................14,000 151 Days) 92 cars per dayViper ..................................100 (49Days) 2 cars per dayTotal Dodge car ...........50,700 (98 Days)
jpd80
Sorry Anthony, I'm in hospital recovering form minor surgery atm and can't access my sources to verify if I've made an error with total days sold, October 1 figures in last month's thread seem to back up your assertion though.... If wrong I will report back and adjust original post......with annotation. How about those camaro figures, 33,400 and climbing, no wonder GM s killing 3rd shift again at Gran River Edited November 14, 2016 by jpd80

Trailhiker
Though it is nice for inventory, sometimes these numbers can get skewed when manufacturers offer deep incentives to drive sales. This drops inventory and raises sales for a couple months, which then changes the rate per month, dropping the 'days of inventory'. It can quickly go the other way, once the incentives are gone. In fact, it can make it worse, pulling sales forward, leaving a lower sales rate than before the incentives were applied.
CurtisH
I think the numbers are wrong for the Charger. An inventory of 16,100 cars is not a 162 day supply, maybe a 62 day supply.

Anthony
It is when they don't sell that fast Nah, that is incorrect. That would mean they are only selling ~100 cars a day using that figure. Based on the last two months sales data, the Chargers are selling anywhere from 226 to 246 per day. Using the lower sales per day number they would have around a 71 day supply if there's 16,100 lying around on lots.
jpd80
No rush, hope you feel better soon. All good Anthony, home and feeling surprisingly well. I found the error, there was an extra 1 in front of the 62 days for Charger

In fact, it can make it worse, pulling sales forward, leaving a lower sales rate than before the incentives were applied. This is true and the figures are simply a snap shot of where inventories are at the start of the month, it gives no indication as to how the company is affected by immediate market conditions boom or down turn. A good example of this would be the strong sales of GM full sized Utilities and the days supply given last month's sales. Now if those sales suddenly go away, days supply begins to soar. The other side of that is where you see small inventory with high selling days, those vehicles like MKT are something being sold simply to fill a niche and get ROI until replaced.
