Fusion Sport retested....

Recommended Posts

Just imagine how spectacular the car would be with a 400-500 lbs. weight loss.

I think people's expectations of weight need to be adjusted...how much lighter do you really really think it can be?

Just as a baseline, a Focus ST weighs in at 3,223 lbs...which is only 200lbs lighter or so then a Fusion FWD with the 1.5T or 2.5. A regular Focus is about 2900lbs

If the Fusion lost 500lbs it would be 12% weight loss...I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon, without the car costing double what it does now. Getting the same weight savings you saw with the F-150 in a car is almost impossible.

I'll even take 3800lbs, but once your going into 4100-4400, we are talking SUV like weight. It's not so much just that, it's the frustration that it's coming from the company that years ago was tauting weight loss, oh how much PR did we all have to read about the damn weight loss. Yeah, it was done, on the F-150 Whoop-de-do. As usual, GM took a Ford idea, ran with it, and implemented it much quicker. 325HP/400HP sounds great these vehicles, but it's the 3 invisible line backers your carrying around that kill the fun.

The Malibu doesn't even offer AWD nor a high performance engine in it...if you only want to run around with 250HP, I'm sure Ford could drop the weight down on the Fusion by making the sheet metal thinner.

Not to mention the Malibu went to a new(?) platform this year and the Fusion is still based off one from what 8 years ago or so? Lets see what the next gen one does in 2020. Not to mention what Ford was doing with the lightweight Fusion wasn't really practical in the real world (plastic windows? ...uh no)

Just a quick internet search - This Fusion weighs 400-500lbs more than most AWD Sedans like Audi and Volvo. I would not question except it is out of line with competition.

Can you post your links? A base Fusion is 3400 lbs. A base A6 is 3800 lbs. You weren't comparing it to an A4 were you? That's way smaller.

For the most part, for a mid priced car, the more power you have the more weight you will have too. With all the torque that the ecoboost cars can dish out, that twist will break a lot of things. So stronger and heavier parts are needed. However, when you can spend more on the chassis, you can keep strength and lighten it up (it just costs more). I really think Ford spent a lot of their R&D dollars on the ecoboost engines, and that seems to be paying off. They are way ahead domestically in that sense. I would say with weight reduction, they are a little behind but not much. Weight/Strength/Cost will be a constant battle for lower priced cars for the foreseeable future.

I looked at the A4 - is that not more in size with fusion?

I was looking at an A4. http://www.edmunds.com/audi/a4/2016/sedan/features-specs/

You're right - it is smaller - but where does the buyer see it? The A4 is smaller the A6 is larger (and still lighter).

Premium Honda Accord V6 3600lbs without AWD http://www.edmunds.com/honda/accord/2016/st-200759703/features-specs/

I guess with a thorough comparison Fusionis in the ballpark on the heavy side - as others have noted.

The A4 is 186″ L x 73″ W x 56″ H - 6 inches shorter in length and 2 inches lower than a Fusion. And an inch shorter wheelbase.

What would the Fusion Sport be shopped against - A4 or A6? My guess is the A4. The Germans seem to have their own compact, mid-size, large scale.

Fusion is in the ballpark with a more thorough comparison.

You can't compare weight based on what people are likely to cross shop. That's apples and oranges.

It's in the ballpark, but I find it interesting how the review calls is heavy without noting it is in line with competitors. Typical auto journalism.

I guess there is really nothing like it to compare. I doubt anyone is cross shopping a Ford Fusion with an A6 Quattro 3.0T

Don't get me wrong - I love the this Fusion Sport - It would be my choice if I wanted a 'sleeper'.

A V6 Camry weighs in around 3400lbs (3407lbs http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/toyota-camry-se-v6-road-test-review). 720lbs less! The fusion must have a seriously beefy AWD system. The Camry also posts 101mph quarter mile trap speeds. Obviously is can't hole shot like the AWD Fusion though.

Don't forget that Turbos and intercoolers add weight vs a NA V6

The difference in weight between the 3.5L and 2.7 Ecoboost is only 7 pounds (447 vs 440). I haven't been able find the weight of standard 3.5L.

The difference in weight between an Ecoboost 2.0L I4 and a non-ecoboost is about 100lbs

The Camry V6 weighs 359 lbs

Yet again I think we need some perspective here...a Fusion that starts around 20K is getting compared to Luxury/near Luxury cars..but people are still bitching about the weight of it, when its configured vs closer priced competition, the weight is about the same as then with in 100lbs or so.

Base Fusion is definitely overweight compared to much of its closer priced competition, in most cases the difference is closer to 200 lbs or so.

Fusion S: 3,438 lbs

Accord LX: 3,239

Camry LE: 3,245

Mazda 6 Sport: 3,250

Malibu LS: 3,097

Optima LX: 3,219

Sonata SE: 3,252

Passat S: 3,263

Altima S: 3,212

Chrysler 200 LX: 3,473

Legacy 2.5i: 3,459

Notes: Legacy has standard AWD; Chrysler 200 is going away in 2017
