Mercedes Reveals X-Class Concept

Here's the Mercedes truck:

 

 


Mercedes-Benz unveiled its X-Class Concept, a preview of the German company's upcoming midsize pickup truck. From what we've heard before, Mercedes' first pickup truck shares its platform with the Nissan NP300 Navara and will be powered by a dieselengine. Key markets for the pickup truck include Latin America, Australia, South Africa, and Europe. It doesn't look like there are any plans to bring the vehicle to the US.

But it's "luxury"

 

Which it means its going to most likely flop.

 

I think Ford has concluded that it can sell a 65K+ Pickup at a Ford dealer no problem, but can't sell that same pickup at a Lincoln dealership. I think one of the drivers of that is that people who buy pickups aren't pretentious enough to require the additional luxury benefits that you might get at a Lincoln or other luxury dealership. Most people buy a luxury car because of its perceived cashe it has within their circle of friends or supposed friends they have. It might be a simple view, but there is lots to it...you can get a high end Ford Ti model or even a Buick that doesn't have the pretentious/cashe that luxury make has, but still has almost the same amenities as them.

While I fully agree with you, you missed my point

 

I was poking fun at the pretentiousness of a lot of luxury buyers.

Meh, it's a concept, the details that make it interesting won't be there in production. It's a Mercedes design, I'm sure it'll look good in the end. All trucks, especially in this segment, look exactly the same.

It's nothing more than a lifestyle pickup. Capability takes a back seat to image. It's a way for hipster yuppies to own a truck, but yet say "Hey, its a Mercedes!".

 

It's what we in ND call a "suit pants pickup". Meaning a truck used by people in suits, not by people who actually tow/haul stuff in the back...

Meh, it's a concept, the details that make it interesting won't be there in production. It's a Mercedes design, I'm sure it'll look good in the end. All trucks, especially in this segment, look exactly the same.

 

It's a Nissan exterior with a Mercedes grille and interior. The interior is the same as the current Mercedes CLA250.

...and door skins are different, the bed outer design, different available drivetrains, suspension changes / tuning, wider track, wheel arch shapes, etc.... Don't be like the Lincoln = Ford bashers. The main shared parts on these trucks are the frame and cab. Most everything else is different or altered. What else can you really do to a truck that they didn't do to differentiate it (apart from designing their own)?

You would definitely classify this as a lifestyle vehicle. I don't think it's ugly necessarily, but it won't appeal to the traditional truck buyer.

 

Don't confuse the concept with the actual truck. X-class is going to be a regular pickup truck that appeals to pickup truck buyers outside US. It is a Nissan Navara afterall if you look beyond the Mercedes badge (which incidentally is not what it means outside the US).

It's nothing more than a lifestyle pickup. Capability takes a back seat to image. It's a way for hipster yuppies to own a truck, but yet say "Hey, its a Mercedes!".

You show an appalling lack of knowledge of how pickup trucks are used outside the US. The short bed is mandatory because vehicle length is often a primary concern. And Mercedes is the world's largest seller of commercial vehicles so "hey, it's a Mercedes" doesn't mean what you think it means.

 

X-Class is replacing the very old and outdated G-class pickup truck/cab chassis.

I doubt it will have different drivetrain or suspension vs. Navara. The concept clearly shows that all the difference are cosmetic vs. Navara - front end, fenders, and exterior skin of the bed. It won't be that much different from the Renault Kangoo to Mercedes Citan transformation.

The concept does hint at a unique exterior skin for the doors and greenhouse despite sharing a rear window kick-up design from the Nissan. It's possible the concept just smoothed out those signature details from the Nissan but the production car may not be that differentiated.

 

As for the interior, I didn't say anything about it because I know it's a version of other Mercedes interiors in concept-form. I'm sure this is an area where the Mercedes will definitely standout as something a little less cartoonish and more upscale.

I'm fully aware of how trucks are sold outside of NA. I honestly could care less.

 

From the comments posted here, I would say Mercedes isn't aware of the needs/wants of the NA market. It'll probably sell less than Nissan trucks do in the NA market.

 

But hey, to each there own. It's not for me...

They already stated they are going to offer a Mercedes V6 turbo diesel (which I'd venture to be their 3.0) mated to the 4Matic AWD and retuned suspension with a wider track.
