2018 Mustang Spy Shots

Recommended Posts

The updates should continue to shore up what is already a strong seller for Ford. The Mustang has been outselling the Camaro for the past 22 months, and we’re not talking a small gap here. In August 2016, Ford sold 8,299 Mustangs versus Chevy’s 5,604 Camaros.

.

bu..bu...bu...but the new Alpha chassis makes the Camaro much more popular!!!!

I find this hard to believe having driven a 911 GT3 with PDK. Is the new 10 speed a dual clutch design with a torque converter added?

No, it's a standard automatic transmission. Lots of enhancements have been made to enhance not only the speed, but the smoothness of the shifts. See the 'first drive' reviews of the F150 with the same (albeit programmed differently) transmission compared to the 6 speed.

Interesting. Knowing how DCTs work - just switching between 2 pre-selected gears on different shafts - I just don't see how a conventional automatic can shift that fast. Guess I need to do some reading.

If that's true then this bodes well for the 10 speed as a Mustang performance option.

Anyone who has ever driven an auto with a shift kit can attest to how quickly they can be made to upshift.

Overlap is the condition where the next gear is being applied while the current gear is being released,

when that period is reduced the shift is quicker but also much rougher.

but yes, downshifting and engine braking seem to be less important in those applications.

But is the rear leg room any different to the way previous Mustangs have been?

You can't have a long hood compact sports car on 107" wheelbase and then

complain that there's no rear leg room, it's not that sort of car.

If we were talking about a bigger, heavier coupe like Challenger than yes, it would be an issue.

How many times does it need to be reinterated that you don't buy a Mustang to carry back seat passengers?

If a Ford Edge or a Fusion doesn't suit you then go buy a Cadillac, Charger or Chevy SS!

People who buy convertibles generally do have people in the back seat though.

Also the SS is out of production or will be soon.

Well, my 86 Capri is a foot shorter and has fairly adequate foot space (usable in a pinch, anyway). I drove 2 co-workers to lunch in my 14 and the 3rd guy had to sit sideways with feet on opposite seat.

As a prior owner of a '68 Firebird and have the Mustang on my next car purchase short list, I never understood why spend the money on seat material and design for something not useable.

Taking the back seat out would save money and weight. Something that the Mustang could use.

The rear leg room measurements are similar for you fox and the later mustangs,

the difference being that the later sets are set in between the wheel wells.

That was done to increase engine set back in the chassis.

We're talking about an occasional back seat here, one intended for short journeys or children.
