So is more Mustang production heading overseas? August USA sales of Mustang declined m-o-m but inventory declined significantly from 26600 to 22800. Hopefully lots of August production was sent overseas to ease the unbelievable delay time from order-to-delivery being experienced in some countries. As USA peak seasonal demand for Mustang winds down Ford now has the enviable option to maintain relatively stable production and retain less for USA while shipping more units overseas.

 

. . . . meanwhile you have Camaro . . . . inventory level from oldest to most recent -- 22200 > 26000 > 27400 > 29900; at what point does GM cry uncle and either cut production or bust out massive incentives??? (perhaps GM thinks the tepid cut of $1000 recently for select models will do the trick)

1) Marketing the car as significantly changed over the previous car

2) Not effectively connected with as many buyers as they expected

3) Not managing inventory levels to reflect sales.

laid at the feet of GM not properly marketing the car and zeroing in on the value customer.

Ford seems to have a healthy inventory. I consider 60-70 day for cars as a good average.

Trucks and vans have so many more configurations, that they need to maintain a higher inventory.

It now looks like luxury cars are going that same route. That makes sense, as they are splitting the market into standard, performance, and high end (black label), forcing the dealers to keep more examples in inventory.

I think part of its biggest problem is it looks like it barely changed. Side by side the differences are obvious, but seeing one on the road by itself, it doesn't look all that different.

My 2015 Mustang GT Premium Fastback (White w/Black Leather, #401A, Automatic w/every available option) was finally sold about 7 weeks ago. At about the same time I got two 2017 Mustang Premium's schedule with virtually the same equipment levels that were both ordered as "Demo" units to expedite scheduling with the assistance of the scheduler at the Ford regional office. Both vehicles were scheduled for production on the same day with consecutive VIN numbers... one being a Fastback and the other being a Convertible. The convertible was shipped immediately and is now at the Newark, NJ ramp for loading onto a carrier for delivery to the dealership within the next few days. The Fastback that I ordered as my new "Demo" has been sitting at the Flat Rock plant since it was released for shipping on 08/30.

 

After contacting my Ford representative last week I was informed that the car wouldn't ship until Monday 09/12. My further inquiry to Ford's Business Assistance Center (BAC) resulted in a reply today that the vehicle was on a "Plant Hold" and wouldn't ship until at least 09/30 meaning delivery to the dealership no sooner than mid-October. Two cars with nearly identical equipment and the car I'm waiting for is stuck at the plant for an undetermined hold. Vehicles ordered for "Demonstrator" service are scheduled second only to customer retail orders. So what is the issue with the "Plant Hold" Ford? Shipping out of the Flat Rock plant has been an issue for years with vehicles often being sent to MAP in order to be loaded on rail cars. Of course, Ford will never tell Dealers what a "Plant Hold" is for!

 

Things have changed a lot at Ford since Alan Mulally retired and the Ford career executives have gone back to their old ways of protecting their own career turf first. Ford generates allocation for vehicle scheduling each week but often allocation isn't scheduled because Ford reports that the plant is full. Ford can't even figure out how many vehicles they can build for any given week. As frustrated as I am, I can certainly appreciate what happens when a retail customer is forced to deal with these delays!

Latest update to the Mustang shipping fiasco noted above...

 

After contacting Ford's BAC (Business Assistance Center) after hearing back from my Ford representative, the BAC response was the car is under a "Plant Hold" and will not ship before September 30th with the actual shipping date subject to change.

Wow, I'm watching dealer stock go down and down and wondering how much this is hurting....

Surprisingly, the car got shipped finally and is now on a rail car at an intermediate point in Ohio on its way to the Newark Ramp!

Good, I bet that's a relief to a lot of dealers and buyers...

 

Blame it on Gremlins....and not the AMC type. ;)

It could stay at the present location for a few days but I've contacted Fleet Car dispatch that has "hot listed" the car for expedited delivery. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the car will be delivered by the end of next week so I can put it on the road for next weekend! Believe me, after driving used cars for the past 2.5 months while waiting for the new Mustang, I understand the frustration that customers go through!

Did you notice any increase in buyers settling for '16 Mustangs as opposed to keeping their orders?

As of yesterday morning at 8:00am, per the latest Vehicle Visibility report just run, the car is at the last stop before arriving at the Newark Ramp! Since it finally left the Flat Rock plant the shipping has gone very smoothly and quicker than usual. Now I'm just hoping that Fleet Car actually expedites the delivery to the dealership!

Being in the Northeast, the Mustang is a niche market for us so we don't stock anywhere near the volume of Mustangs as dealers in other markets. Even so, Mustang sales have been pretty strong since the 2015MY Mustang was introduced. Two months ago we were offered allocation for two 2017 Mustangs for September production which I'd have taken anyway but our Dealer Principal and General Manager decided they wanted 8, even though we're going into a slower sales period now. I was able to get a number of base EcoBoost Fastbacks scheduled with automatic transmission (the volume model) and 2 hard-to-get V-6/Automatic Fastbacks along with a EcoBoost Premium Convertible (Ruby Red/Black Leather/Automatic/Navigation) & GT Premium Convertible (Ruby Red/Automatic, Navigation, 19" Wheels, Adaptive Cruise). There's also a Magnetic Metallic GT Premium Fastback (6-Speed Manual/Black Leather/GT Performance Package) on the way.

 

Until these other cars hit the ground at the dealership, we only have one 2015 and one 2016 Mustang in stock, both being GT's. The 2015 is a Mustang GT Fastback w/6-Speed Manual, Black Leather, 50th Anniversary Appearance Package and every other option which we just added Silver Over-the-Top Racing Stripes to because we've had the car for so long. None of us can believe that we've had this car so long as normally it's a car that would have sold very quickly. The 2016 Mustang GT in stock is a Silver GT w/Automatic & Black Cloth.

 

Buyers for this generation Mustang are buying the cars with their desired specifications so it's made it a bit more difficult to decide what models, options and features to order for stock. With minimal incentives from Ford, buyers are buying the cars that meet their specifications regardless of the model year. The customers with very specific requirements continue to place factory orders per usual.

Nice selection there..

I can imagine it must be hard to cater for walk-ins as well as buyers who like to order.

Hopefully, those on order are varied enough to attract a cross section of buyers,

half the battle is getting people to sit in them, then the car sells itself.

As it turned out, the 2017 Mustang GT arrived at the Newark Ramp and had been unloaded from the rail car, loaded on a car carrier and delivered even before the Vehicle Visibility status had been updated. Thank you Fleet Car for the expedited delivery! The car was delivered to the dealership on Wednesday morning (09/28/2016) at about 8:45am but I'm still waiting for the service department, due to the usual end of the month deliveries and other service work in progress, to get it prepped and cleaned so I can start driving it. I've attached a few photos of the car after it came off the car carrier.

So how does this "demo" work? How long do you get to keep it and do you have to loan it out for test drives?

 

I get to drive the new "Demo" until it's sold or gets close to the Ford Credit mileage limit which if I remember correctly is 10,000 miles. I'll never put that many miles on it as I only live .9 miles from the office and don't get too many opportunities to drive more than an a half hour or hour away via the highways. I do occasionally take it for highway runs just to put higher speed runs on it for a distance and when appropriate let it gallop a bit when conditions are favorable! For advertising purposes, Ford does not consider "Demo" units to be new cars and will not pay advertising co-op dollars for any ad including "Demos" being advertised as new. However, in Connecticut, 'Demos" are sold as "New Car Demonstrators" and treated as new cars since they've never been registered or titled. As a "Demo" unit it does get used for test drives to qualified prospects seriously interested in it. Otherwise, potential customers drive one of the other GT's in stock with the automatic transmission.
