brucelinc
I have been considering a Mustang GT so yesterday I took a test drive in a GT Premium and was impressed with the overall ride, comfort and refinement compared to the last generation. I told the salesman that if I were to get one, it would be a special order and that I had already used the "build & price" area of the website to determine what I would want. I did not mention pricing at all but rather I just showed him what I had in mind in terms of options. He looked over what I had come up with and excused himself for a few minutes to chat with the Sales Manager. When he returned, he told me that if I wanted to order the one that I wanted, the price would be $200 over invoice. After some general chit-chat about colors and other things, I left with the understanding that I would consider his offer and decide in the next few days or so. I have not really been shopping for Mustangs. I do like this dealership and if I were to buy, it would be from them. Do you think this is a fair price? Really, I think anything within shouting distance of invoice is fair. I usually shoot for invoice, which leaves profit for them, and an overall decent deal for me. Honestly, with that being their first offer, I'd say 'make it invoice and we've got a deal.'
brucelinc
Thanks for the feedback. I also try to buy around invoice and have always been successful in doing so. I just need to decide what I want to drive. My last 2 daily drivers have been a Lincoln LS and now the MKS. I no longer commute to work on a daily basis and we also have a 2014 Taurus to use for a family car. I had been considering another Lincoln but I really do not need another large 4 door sedan. I do love the performance and ease of tuning the twin turbo engines used in the Lincolns though. I will be test driving an MKZ with the 3.0 twin turbo soon. I doubt many people cross-shop a Mustang and a Lincoln MKZ...........!
akirby
$200 over invoice is a good price. You might be able to do slightly better than that but not by much.
brucelinc
Honestly, I was a little bit surprised when they shot me that price. I figured we could eventually get there but I wouldn't have been shocked if they started at $500 or even $1000 over invoice. I have bought cars there before and the sales manager knows me so that probably helped avoid some of the usual back and forth negotiation. I just wasn't sure what the market was like for Mustang GTs. Thanks again for the comments.
akirby
$500 over invoice used to be pretty standard but nowadays Invoice or $100 - $200 over invoice seems to be the new standard on vehicles not in short supply and/or high demand.
