This order won't replace the CHP Explorer though rumor is the CHP officers wasn't thrilled with them.

BORG
Taurus PI has become a very negligible business for them, as has the Taurus in general, definitely time to focus on UI exclusively and get out of that side of the business.

Well if you read the FCA press release, what jumps out to me is..."RWD" and "Sedan" Just as the RWD Crown Vic was a low cost bullet proof option, sounds to me like that is the message. Yeah. They'll soon find out that having four doors and a rear diff wasn't what made the Crown Vic durable
Bob Rosadini
Let's say the CHP's choice of the Explorer was somewhat 'controversial'........... 7m-please elaborate-was it the body (Utility)? or the AWD?? Or perhaps both? I have to say, here in New England Explorer seems to predominate. And talking to LEO's seems the cube capacity with all the equipment they carry these days is a big plus. I myself have to say from a seating position, I'd much rather be driving my SHO than my daughter-in laws Explorer.
fuzzymoomoo
I have a good friend who is a Border Patrol agent. His post has Chargers, Crown Vics, and Tauruses. The agents all love the Crown Vics as an all around car, like the Chargers because they're fast (but every single one of them all say they can't turn worth a damn) and the Tauruses they pretty much all agree are the best all around handling but they hate the lack of interior space.

jpd80
Yes each Ford PI is $2000 over-sticker price per unit....... Let's not pretend Ford don't play this game. Considering the strong sales, Ford is playing the game very well by offering AWD as standard and FWD as a delete option. I think it's the mix off products being offered that's attracting so many LEVs and the easier changeover of existing CVPI equipment to PI and PIU. That was the real master stroke in all of this - Ford tuning into LEV's desire to save money by reusing existing police equipment, fitting out a new LEV with no reuse of equipment can literally double the price. Fgts
Considering the strong sales, Ford is playing the game very well by offering AWD as standard and FWD as a delete option. Don't think too many departments care when Charger pursuit is the best selling police sedan. Explorer PI is doing well but Tahoe PPV is a close 2nd. The CVPI days use to see 5000-8000 sales a month owning 75-80% of that market. That was the real master stroke in all of this - Ford tuning into LEV's desire to save money by reusing existing police equipment, fitting out a new LEV with no reuse of equipment can literally double the price. No, Ford did it because that's all they had to work with at the time, nothing really wrong with that when FoMoCo was in a financial bind during the Great Recession. The main point is Ford looks for the "lowest bid" contracts like GM and FCA do.
RichardJensen
Don't think too many departments care when Charger pursuit is the best selling police sedan So let me ask you this: Is the Charger the best selling PI sedan because it's cheaper than the Taurus? 7Mary3
CHP deal has to focus on one thing.....low bid! Low bid is a factor (why the Explorer was chosen over the Tahoe PPV), but it's not the only factor the CHP considers.
jpd80
No, Ford did it because that's all they had to work with at the time, nothing really wrong with that when FoMoCo was in a financial bind during the Great Recession. You're missing the point here. Ford absolutely channel stuffed LEVs with as many CVPIs as they wanted at the end of production. The reason being was that they knew that all those LEVs would be loath to switch brands and throw away close on $20K or more of police equipment, So when you continue to reference lowest price, that change over of equipment weighs heavily on those police budgets. D3 may have been all Ford had to work with but boy, they did a great job with Explorer, it did a lot of work with police vehicle assessment groups so knew exactly what was required, The Taurus PI is nowhere near as good as the PIU for obvious reasons, Ford wants the sales to go in that direction - not Taurus because it can charge more money for PIU and still cut the legs off Tahoe PI sales. There are bigger fish to fry than chasing cheapest cruiser sales.... Edited July 24, 2016 by jpd80
Fgts
So let me ask you this: Is the Charger the best selling PI sedan because it's cheaper than the Taurus? Nope, if price alone was the factor the fleet Impala would have been #1, even the Caprice nearly outsold the Impala despite the $10k+ price advantage. The Fleetpala's dead leaving Tahoe and Caprice PPVs. Some departments think the Charger is a pos, some departments swear by them. Many southeastern local, state highway patrols love them, while Ford owns the northern states. AFAK the furthest north you'll see a Charger (along with Caprice) is NJ.
