luxpow
The car should automatically lock when the key goes more than say 20 feet away from the car. Should also lock if left unlocked for more that 10 minutes (or user configurable timeout. 0 seconds to disable feature) I hope someone tells me this feature already exists. I always doubt if locked my car or not.

bikinchris
Me too. The cars that use the no-key style ignition could do this. Also, the hybrid cars could turn off when the key leaves the vehicle so the idiots who die from carbon dioxide from leaving the car on in the garage can stay alive. But I do suspect the batteries would die quickly if this was implemented. Edited August 26, 2016 by bikinchris
luxpow
Well I didnt mean engine off when key leaves a certain range but the car doors should lock.
BORG
There is no reason this can't be done now technologically, but I'm pretty sure there is significant risk to a car that automatically locks itself.
fordtech1
Actually Corvettes have had passive locking for a while. When the ignition is off and doors are closed and fob isn't in vehicle. After 8 seconds it locks. The first generation of keyless entry in the corvette was called passive keyless entry. Basically, the remote started transmitting when moving. As you approach the car it unlocked and when you went out of range it locked back. I can imagine that was hard on remote batteries. The newer ones just wait for you to touch the pad handle. What's quite interesting is a lot goes on when you have IA. On fords, when you touch the handle, the vehicle sends a signal to remote and the antenna in the handle picks up the return signal from the remote to verify correct remote. Then it unlocks. All that happens so quick. Plus when you get in the vehicle, another set of antennas detects the fob in the car. Jperry
Cadillac has had this feature for many years. While I cannot confirm since I am still waiting for delivery, my understanding is the 2021 F-150 now has this option as well. So maybe Ford finally caught up. harmacist
This would be a nice feature but hard to get used to.
