2017 Ford F-150 to Debut with All-New 3.5-Liter EcoBoost Engine and 10-Speed Transmission

Recommended Posts

Ford, America’s truck leader, continues its relentless pace of innovation, delivering more torque and better acceleration to 2017 F-150 customers with the all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost®engine and 10-speed transmission.

Looks like the 10-speed is std with the new 3.5L. That truck is going to be a rocket.

Smarter shift logic helps 2017 F-150 customers tow with improved confidence using tow/haul mode. All-new real-time-adaptive shift-scheduling algorithms monitor more than a dozen powertrain- and driver-control signals to ensure the right gear at the right time for an engaging driving experience, including a new Haul Ass mode.

Wow! I guess they were serious about this new powertrain.........

Am I reading this right? The 10-speed will only be available for 2017 with the 3.5?

I didn't read it that way, just that the new 3.5L will be paired with a new 10 speed (not excluding others from getting the 10 speed).

But, even if it is exclusive to the 3.5L for '17, that wouldn't be a first. Didn't the 6 speed have a spread out intro as well? Likely due to capacity constraints as akirby pointed out.

Ford just announced a huge investment into the Livonia transmission plant so I'm assuming they are building more capacity for it, but in the interim it will be limited. I'm not sure what the timeline is on that plant but I'm sure it won't be ready by this summer.

This article says the other engines won't get the 10 speed yet: http://www.autoblog.com/2016/05/03/2017-ford-f-150-powertrain-details/?ncid=edlinkusauto00000016

All EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 F-150s will come with the 10-speed transmission. The smaller EcoBoost 2.7-liter engine and the V8 will offer different gearboxes. Ford is spending $1.6 billion to upgrade facilities in Michigan and Ohio to build the new powertrain combination.

The article also states the HP will remain at 365. I find that hard to believe. I would expect at least somewhat of a bump in HP.

That's only possible if the additional torque occurs at lower RPM

Congratulations on the 10-speed..... Nice way to stick it to the V8 club...... Ford man. I really liked the F-150 but hey they want everyone to drive an ecoboost, so gotta start fading the V8 out somehow. The 6.2 is still a beast and to sit there and say that without knowing what real numbers this will have is silly, as I'm sure the 6.2 will be updated anytime now, so it will be making big power still. We already have boat loads of power as it is, anything more is icing on the cake. I say focus on transmission efficiency across the Ford/Lincoln lineup.....

With dual injector setup, I'm betting the HP took a bigger jump than torque did. Ford is holding their cards close to their chest and not releasing the HP number until the last minute.

Once the fuel mileage numbers are released, I'm betting it'll be icing on the cake...

Confused you are, yes.

EDIT: Or are you saying that keeping the HP the same is only possible if the additional torque occurs at lower RPM? That could make sense

Yes. HP = (torque * RPM)/5252

If you keep the same torque at higher RPM you make more HP

If you make more torque at the same RPM you make more HP

Therefore, if torque increases 30 ft/lbs but HP stays the same, then peak torque must occur at lower RPM, otherwise the HP would have increased.

OK, yes, we're on the same page.

I thought you were saying increasing the HP was only possible if peak torque was at a lower RPM.

But, since the RPM for peak torque and peak HP aren't the same, it would be possible to increase peak torque but not increase peak HP. Not likely, but it's possible. I think RAM did it with the Cummins when they increased it to 900 ft-lbs. In reality, you can't pick anything out just given the peak numbers.

That's exactly what happens with Premium fuel in some of the ecoboost engines. Peak torque increases with premium but HP stays the same. I think it was one of the 2.0L EBs, can't remember for sure.
