mackinaw
From today's Detroit Free Press: Ford CEO Mark Fields said the Dearborn automaker will not be left behind in the race to develop long-range electric vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 and Chevrolet Bolt that can go 200 miles or more on a single charge. “We want to make sure that we’re either among the leaders or in a leadership position,” Fields said during a conference call Thursday with analysts. “When you look at some of the competitors and what they’ve announced, clearly, that’s something we’re developing for.” http://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2016/04/28/ford-ceo-confirms-plans-long-range-electric-car/83656872/ Edited April 28, 2016 by mackinaw

BORG
Well...that was actually a little more evasive than the headline suggests. But I think it's safe to assume that all the mainstream manufacturers will be onto of this, even if Ford is a little tardy. transitman
Ford may be tardy putting out product, but who knows how far the R&D is. I only read a portion, but it seems until a refined finish product is ready, Ford isn't going to rush to market. Despite what's already out there, this technology is still in it's early stages. bzcat
This dovetail with what I mentioned in the other thread. Ford is just waiting for battery prices to come down. Ford can probably do a 100 mile PHEV in 2019 that sells for $25k and that may lend itself to a 200 mile EV for $30k (?) if you take out the engine and add more batteries. The bottom line is that when the poor guy (Kevin something) said Ford has no immediate plan to do anything more than 100 miles, he was specifically talking about the 2017 Focus EV vis-a-vie 2017 Bolt (supposedly both will go on sale by summer 2016). His job was to talk about products that Ford has for sale, not what Ford has in developoment. But context is overrated on the internet. akirby
They could be waiting on new battery technology as well.
jpd80
The three Battery sizes used by Ford are 1.4 Kwhr, 7.6 Kwhr and 23 Kwhr.. Consider the change in cost that GM has wrested from lithium Ion batteries: Since 2010 they have dropped from $400-$500/Kwhr to around $150/Kwhr So if Ford can achieve similar price reductions then I'd think the chances of a Ford + 200 mile EV are increasing as time goes on...
