  • Ford Motor Company average transaction prices grow almost three times the rate of overall industry; U.S. sales of 173,723 vehicles decline 3 percent versus last year

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 2, 2016 – Coming off strong results last January, Ford Motor Company’s total U.S. sales of 173,723 vehicles declined 3 percent last month versus a year ago.

Bright spots for January include industry-leading transaction price increases for the month, the best start since 2004 for Ford brand SUV sales and an 8-percent gain in sales for Lincoln.

“For Ford, overall transaction prices were up $1,800 in January – almost three times more than the overall industry average – driven largely by strong customer demand, especially for our SUVs and F-Series pickups,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

Ford SUVs totaled 50,212 sales last month – a 3 percent increase versus a year ago and the brand’s best sales start since 2004. The all-new Edge was the biggest driver, posting a 26 percent jump on sales of 9,533 vehicles.

Transit sales increased 51 percent in January with 9,631 vehicles sold, lifting overall Ford van performance 20 percent for their best start since 1985.

F-Series January sales totaled 51,540 vehicles, down 5 percent. F-Series average transaction pricing grew $2,500 last month, while incentive spending was down $500 versus a year ago.

“We continue seeing strong commercial fleet orders for F-150 and will be filling more orders this year,” LaNeve said. “As the largest seller of commercial vehicles, this represents good news for Ford trucks and the overall economy.”

Lincoln sales increased 8 percent, for the best start of the year since 2008. Lincoln sold 7,177 vehicles, and the all-new MKX posted a 51 percent increase with 2,052 vehicles sold.

It was Lincoln’s best January for SUVs since 2001.

More important than sales numbers:

For Ford, overall transaction prices were up $1,800 in January – almost three times more than the overall industry average – driven largely by strong customer demand, especially for our SUVs and F-Series pickups,

And this little nugget:

F-Series average transaction pricing grew $2,500 last month, while incentive spending was down $500 versus a year ago.

That's what kills me when people only look at sales volume. If you want higher ATPs and margins you're going to have less sales but more profit.

But you get more flexibility in manufacturing and the ability to lower prices when needed and still turn a profit.

You mean like leasing an Equinox for $139/month with $1000 down? Or the new Malibu for $109/month with $1000 down?

Yeah, they need to bring out an "all new" Focus every 4 years! 5 years is ancient!!!! Corollas are "all new every generation" !!!! :P

Anyway, back in the real world, the Transit shows that vans need not be 'He-Man BOF'.

Some will scoff at Focus, but it sent Honda back to the drawing board and cut the 9th gen Civic's life cycle. The 10th Gen is a bit wacky, but will sell to Los Angelenos. Don't like DCT? Go get a CVT, then.

Focus inventory and soft sales are an issue for Ford but not the end of the world.

Keep the situation under control but don't lose objectivity by doing a fire sale,

There's not much profit on compacts so maybe slow the line an let volume

Slide for now.

At least the Focus isn't getting killed off like the Dart and 200! The Sterling Hts Chrysler plant is down for 6 weeks.

Fiat will drop the Chrysler/Dodge brands too, I predict, to save Italian makes. Mopar fans will hyper-ventilate. But should have thought about building better cars since the Volare days! They go on and on about how great the LH/Cloud cars were, but they fell apart, just like the '79 St. Regis [what a dumb name] tanks.

How many times do they have to get 'saved'?

Isn't the Mark 4 Focus coming in 2018? Why panic? Ford made huge profits last year.

The crux of the FCA situation is They lacked the Scale to ever be profitable with low margin C and CD cars especially if they are made in the US with union labor. They could move them to mexico but I don't believe they have the capital to relocate these products, nor the funds to Support competitive product cycles at the volume they were being sold at.

As the cost of new platforms continues to grow Scale become more and more important.

While I won't buy a truck or SUV, I'm not going to lose sleep over them selling well. Ford is making $$ hand over fist not trying to "force buyers to have Euro tastes". Even over there, the Kuga is a big seller, generating profits.

With RS having AWD, will the Mk 4 have it as option? Would make sense to get Subaru intenders.
