Jeep is preparing a new crossover to slot in between the Renegade and Cherokee. Spied here for the first time, the new model is expected to arrive sometime around the middle of the new year. And with it,FCA's off-road brand will finally have a successor for the Compass and Patriot.

From the little bit we can project at this early stage, the new C-segment Jeep is expected to ride on a modified version of the platform that underpins the Renegade and Fiat 500X. Motivation is tipped to come from the company's new 2.0-liter turbocharged Hurricane inline-four mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. We expect it to come in front and all-wheel-drive versions.

The big question mark at this point is what the vehicle will be called. As the replacement for both the Compass and thePatriot, this model could adopt either nameplate – or it could wear a new one entirely. If the Renegade and 500X are anything to go by, the new Jeep could be offered as a Fiat as well, which could easily be dubbed the 500XL. We'll have to wait and see, but in the meantime you can check out the prototype – albeit in camouflaged form – in the image gallery above.

Looks better than the current ones from what I can see, but do they really need 3 small crossovers?

Yeah, I don't get that either. I always thought once the Cherokee and then Renegade came out, there were your Patriot/Compass replacements. But I guess they needed a volume platform mate for the latest Fiat 500__ model.....

Renegade already is the platform mate. This one will also be built on that platform.

Renegade is B-segment but because it is imported from Italy, Jeep positioned it as more premium product vs. Compass/Patriot.

Compass replacement is C-segment hatchback size but because it will be made in the US somewhere, Jeep will probably continue to position it as more value-oriented/high volume product vs. Renegade.

Cherokee is C-segment wagon size and it is a different segment than the C-segment hatchback size CUVs.

Well, let's be fair. It wasn't hard not to position anything as "more premium" than the Patriot/Compass rental queens.

That makes zero sense...well at least in the US market. I can understand in the EU...but then again the Cherokee looks like an escapee from some off brand EU auto company vs what a traditional Jeep looks like...christ the Renegade looks more Jeep then it does.

While being a total poser vehicle to boot!

It definitely makes sense overseas but I think you are dismissing not only the existence but the potential of this segment in the US market.

  • Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage twins are on pace to hit 130k units this year.
  • Subaru is exploiting the size difference to the tune of over 80k XV sales this year (in addition to 150k Forester).
  • Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is outselling the longer Outlander 2 to 1 (YTD 30k vs. 15k).
  • Jeep has been selling Compass/Patriot and Cherokee (and Liberty before it) side by side for years and will easily hit 150k units this year with the C/P twins.
  • VW is on pace to sell 30k Tiguan this year.
  • Nissan will be jumping in next year with Qashqai to compliment the Rogue.

Altogether, the segment is doing about 500k units this year and growing. For FCA, this is an important segment to maintain its dominance because they sure are not getting this kind of growth out of compact cars.

The 2WD Jeep Patriot is a favorite of small business deliveries and Chicago Transit Authority admin. Also see a few as Shopping Center/Parking Garage security cars.

Some are used as runners for Medical Testing companies, delivering samples here and there. Taking place of the Chevy HHR, and older compact station wagons. In the 90's it was Escort/Cavalier wagons doing this.

VW Golf wagons are too pricey.
