Police Interceptor Utility

Recommended Posts

I just found out last night that we are replacing our fleet of Interceptor Sedans with the utility interceptor. I have driven one for one lap at our driving school and liked it better than the sedan. Anyone here have any long term patrol use experience? The sedan is very tight when getting in or out and cramped when riding two in a car. Thanks in advance!

Given the fact that Taurus sales are down and Explorer sales are up and they both occupy the same plant, I'd say the Taurus is on borrowed time since the Explorer is a higher profit vehicle and Ford is limiting production of the Taurus to make more explorers and PIUs.

The MKS is going away so they can make more Explorers and I'd assume that once a Lincoln model comes along with the next gen Explorer in a few years the Tarurus will also follow suite.

I'd highly doubt the Taurus (or any kind of full-size Ford) is gone because of SUV production. Fusion is leaving Flat-Rock and I doubt Ford would introduce a low-volume, full-size luxury sedan (Contenental) and not feild a volume competitor when GM, FCA and the imports still bringing out full-size cars at that time.

Continental may not end up being a low-volume sedan, as it is (reportedly) targeted squarely at the Chinese market.

That's another 1500 cars (at most) a month?, that isn't Fusion numbers. The China-made Taurus would be thier best selling luxury full-size there.

just delivered three to a local Municipality...its ALL about interiorspace, and places to mount all the necessary computer, license plate recognition etc etc...AND Police personnel are getting BIGGER....especially when you add all the belt attachments etc...the extra hip room in the Explorer is significant.

Given the timeline of the current contract and what is going on with the Explorer, I'd say that the current Taurus sticks around till 2018 or so at the plant in smaller and smaller numbers. They are lucky if they are going to sell 40-50k of them this year and not having any updates since 2013 isn't help any either.

There is room for a CD4 based Taurus at Flat Rock if the Fusion goes away (language said don't expect the need for it...which means that Mexico can do more units an hour or sales are going to fade with improved CUV sales the next few years) but who knows what they have planned at flat rock. I don't think Fusion production was very high and Mustang sales will settle down to about 100-120k units a year depending on how well overseas sales keep up. The Contential will be lucky to sell 30-50k units world wide.

Wouldn't surprise me if they moved MKZ to FRAP making more room for Fusion in Hermosillo. MKZ and Continental will share the new 3.0 and other unique Lincoln bits. Not sure about the hybrid though.

That makes more sense to me, with the move happening with the MKZ redesign.

I have been a Sherrifs Deputy for 6 years now. I started in the famous Crown Vic, been in pursuits, crashes, and rough rides in that thing. Just pure reliable those cars were. I couldn't tell you how many times I took it in the shop to find out parts were broken or bent and still drove hard and smooth.

I have been driving a Ford Explorer Utility now since 2013. It's hands down a better patrol vehicle and you heard the praise I just gave the CV. More room, better seats, faster, handles better, more capable, and just as reliable. More aggressive looking also as we drive black and whites with push bumpers. I don't know what else to say about it but if you have specific questions let me know and I'll try to answer them. By the way we drive the 3.7L V6 AWD model.

Wolfpak-glad to hear your positive review. Talking to a guy over the weekend and he was bad mouthing the Explorer PI based on an experience his department was having with their first one at 100,000 miles having repeated transmission issues. What kind of mileage do you guys have on yours?

We have outfitted a majority of 300+ department with them. Mine doesn't have as many miles as I had a 6 month hiatus after an ankle injury. 31k on mine but others in my unit have 60k+ with no issues. Some of our first issued ones are closing in on 100k and other than some minor leaks in seals I haven't heard of anything catastrophic happening on its own. We have had several crashed units however and they are safe vehicles.

Thx for response. Clearly vehicle of choice around here.
