Extended Warranty '16 Explorer Sport

It's a gamble. The odds are never in your favor (just like Vegas) but you can always come out ahead on a specific vehicle or two. If you can afford to pay for a large repair down the road I'd skip it and keep that $2K in your pocket.

If you really want one, make sure it's a Ford ESP and not some third party warranty. I think you can get a Ford ESP like that for around $1600 or less. Check with Flood Ford or google for more options. You can buy it from any dealer at any time in the first 12 months with no additional cost.

I wouldn't call then a gimmick. But they do generate a lot of profit from dealers especially when they overcharge (much like the mop-n-glo paint treatment).

The one time I recommend them is for folks on fixed or low incomes who can't afford a big repair bill. In that case get the ext. warranty up front (at a good price) and finance it with the vehicle so you're only paying a few bucks per month. You'll pay more in the long run but you won't have a single large repair bill.

I've always gotten my money back for the Ford ESP or any OEM warrantee, it is the only warrantee I would ever buy. OEM warrantees are the best and usually cheaper than the other options out there. Just looked and 100K/8 year PremiumCare with exterior/interior lighting option with $50 deductible is $1725 at both Koch and Flood. You can also buy it anytime in the first 36K miles, though the price does go up after the first 12K miles.
