Ford wants Smart Cruise Control That is Grade/Speed Sensitive

Recommended Posts

The C-Max and Fusion PHEV have a version of this tech. This new gps based grade/speed sensitive system takes it many steps further, but EV vehicles have EV Plus, which learns your frequent destinations and adjusts EV use to maximize HVB economy and Eco Cruise which relaxes acceleration up hills to avoid spikes in RPM's.

See, there's a lot of lead up to driverless cars where automation and interactive systems can reduce

driver input to when its really needed. Imagine interactive cruise in slow crawling traffic where

cars talk to each other, allowing some to move in turn, change lanes - work as a collective.

Nearly all other manufacturers have migrated to systems that will bring the car to a stop if you are in traffic and even now start back up and walk the car in traffic. (Stop + Go) They will however cancel if the car stops for more than 2 - 4seconds. Ford has not embraced auto cruise control functions, they still offer very basic systems that has been around for 10+ years while the industry over the past 3 years has migrated to full control systems. Ford's system only operate above 25mph, can't automatically mitigate an accident and when the vehicle moves out of the way it is WOT to resume the speed where other systems use a nice smooth acceleration. Ford has publicly said these full systems will be on the lineup by 2020 and they will introduce it on a 2016 Ford line car. Today the only the 2016 MKX offerers a system that can mitigate an accident but system still will not operate at ultra low speeds <3mph and I can't find if the system will actually slow the car to a stop if a road it is being used on comes to a stop. So while Ford can put out all these fancy Farley driven PR pieces the facts speak they are very far behind the industry in these type of systems.

It's probably a case of Ford watching and waiting instead of being last in when a tech change arrives for vesicles talking to each other.

The fact that Ford is waiting until 2020 tells me that they are going next gen and suffering slight pain now to do that...

Borg? Is that you?

I remember Borg complaining non-stop through the mid-00's about how far behind Ford was on vehicle tech. Like how there wasn't an aux port or some such. Maybe also how you couldn't use bluetooth to pair your phone for handsfree use. I can't remember exactly. All I remember is that somehow, Ford was doomed because they weren't up to the very last second on vehicle tech.

Then Sync came out.

This industry runs on such slow cycles that if you're late to the game with a truly first class product, you're not going to suffer (remember: Lexus was the last luxury brand introduced by a Japanese mfr, Explorer came after the Cherokee--and after the Lambdas, Escape came after the RAV4, etc.)

Wow name calling, how mature. Im sure that makes everyone now think how much more valid your point it.

The fact is Ford is really trailing the industry now where just 3 years ago they were leading, in everything from vehicle features, design, alt energy powertrains and vehicle packaging. They rested and the industry passed them very fast there wasn't the continuous improvement that they did so well in the 2008-2013 time frame. It seems Ford can only have it 2 ways. One be very innovative and quality takes a dump, or be boring as hell and then get decent quality. Other than the MKC, Edge, and F-150 there is very little that I really find exciting in the lineup now. Being someone that now drives 25K a year I highly doubt my next car will be a Ford which is really sad being I was a 4th generation that had worked at Ford. What is even more telling, my Father and Uncle who are both Ford retirees were talking over the weekend at a wedding we were all at about how my uncle was turning in his car (2013 Escape) and is getting a Subaru he has ordered.

Looking at the rebates they are now tossing on cars, the stock price and real lack of excitement of bread and butter cars, I'm not the only one that has noticed this. The Performance halo car push Ford looks more like GM of the early 00's than what they did 3 years ago. Well and to a lesser extent that the only thing that matters in the lineup is the F-150 and Explorer.

Other than automatic braking, what features do all these other vehicles have that Ford doesn't have?

Design is subjective. To me Ford's new designs are as good as they've ever been.

Sounds to me like you just don't like the new Fords. Which is fine - they can't please everyone.
