Not sure if i'm posting in the right forum, wasn't sure.

I have x-plan through my company - and i understand how the pricing and discounts work, however.. I also know that some dealers don't like using it and some play games to get their doc fees and dealership fees.

There is a local dealer that has a 2015 Expedition XLT listed for 41K on their site. I emailed, asked for the x-plan price, and was quoted 43K plus tax. I asked what the disparity was about, and he told me that the online internet pricing is typically cheaper than the x-plan price and that i should stick to that. The 41K would be plus tax and $900 in fees. Works out to be cheaper. He did tell me that if i could get access to Z-Plan, that price would be even less than the internet price and significantly cheaper than X-Plan.

Question is - is he being honest, or is this a game? If X-Plan is so close to invoice price (invoice +4% right?) then how can the internet price be THAT much more under invoice? Unless this is just a loss leader?

X plan is true dealer invoice minus 0.4% plus $275. It ends up being around $150 over invoice, give or take $50.

A/Z plan is 4% less or about $1200 less on a $30K vehicle.

Ford gives the dealers a spiff check for each plan sale. I'm told it's a few hundred bucks at least. Could be more for A/Z.

With X plan you're protected from unwanted fees and being forced to purchase extras. The doc fee is limited to $100. You're guaranteed to get any rebates including in most cases dealer cash which comes in the form of additional X plan rebates.

There are dealers who are selling below dealer invoice which would be below X plan price. As long as you take the doc fee into account and you're sure they're not adding any other fees or forcing you to buy options you don't want then you might be able to beat X plan. It's just riskier.

Ask yourself this though - if you're offering to use a X plan pin and the dealer gets an additional spiff check from Ford that ends up giving them roughly $500 over invoice - why would they turn that down and take $1000 less unless they're making it up somewhere else that you don't see?

I've seen folks posting that dealers are doing exactly that so I guess it is possible, but it just doesn't make much sense to me that they would sell below invoice without X plan. Holdback is $1600 so I guess they could sell it $500 under invoice and still make $1K but once you pay the salesman and other overhead it seems like a pretty slim margin.

BTW - you should check that X plan price yourself. Go to fordpartner.com and browse dealer inventory and it will show you the X plan price so you know they're not playing games.
