How "intelligent" is the oil-minder system?

I have always changed my oil and filter at around 3K miles but I am thinking that is overkill anymore with today's synthetics.

So, is their any "smart technology" that goes into the oil-minder system or is it just based on mileage driven? With all the information derived from today's computer driven vehicles, you would hope that by keeping track of a variety of parameters they could be used to better tell you when to change oil thru the engine-minder system. But is Ford doing that? I am hoping someone on the Board knows what goes into Ford's oil-minder system.

Yes, the newer ones are 'smart' meaning they take into account the type of driving, etc. Our '09 Flex is a 'dumb' minder meaning it only looks at total number of miles. My mother-in-law puts very few miles on her Escape and most are around town. Her reminder will come on around 2500-3k miles. But yeah, changing at 3k today is normally a waste of money unless you are driving in 'extreme' duty conditions.

Our Fusion Energi has an IOLM (Intelligent Oil Life Monitor). Right now we've driven about 8500 miles total, with about 6000 of them being with the ICE running and the car indicates that we have about 60% oil life remaining. Since the only time we run the ICE is on the freeway the miles are easy on the oil.
