HofstraJet
Do 2015 Expys come with Hankooks? Seems odd. Thanks!
akirby
It's possible. Ford has used Hankooks on several vehicles. http://www.hankooktireusa.com/Pglob/OE_4.aspx?pageNum=1&subNum=3&ChildNum=
HofstraJet
Thanks for the quick response. About to take delivery and that struck me as weird.
caplanm
Do 2015 Expys come with Hankooks? Seems odd. Thanks! Seems that all but those with 22" tires/wheels are Hankooks. The 22" Tires are Pirelli Scorpion Verde's
twintornados
I remember an article about tire companies and how they supply tires to the auto industry, the quote was thusly; "Car manufacturers want three things in a tire...they want them round, black, and cheap...and the first two don't really count." Honestly, I wish Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone would "mend the fence"....
akirby
Depends on the vehicle. I know that Ford worked with Firestone on the 2000 Lincoln LS and went through 22 different versions before finding the right one. And a lot of times the OEM tires are not the same as the aftermarket versions even with the same name (Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 was a prime example - there were at least 3 different OEM versions that were different and all 3 were different from the aftermarket version). I'm sure on some the mandate is cost and on others it's performance or comfort. Ford seems to do a pretty good job matching the tires to the vehicle. Dave-S
Don't want to start a controversy on Hankooks but I had the Hankook Optimos on my last car which was a Hyundai Sonata and I could not in good conscience recommend them to anyone. The only thing they were good at was tire wear.......not uncommon to get 75K miles out of them. But on the negative side, cornering was poor and they were extremely noisy even when new. Maybe other options in Hankook's line-up are better but the Optimo is one that I would avoid if you can. I love them on my '11 Explorer and will not buy anything else! Gary

It's dangerous and unnecessary despite what some people lead you to believe.
ajvolpe
I just ordered a 2015 Expedition 4x4, and saw and drove the Hankook's on a demo ride. I did not notice any abnormal noise or ride discomfort at interstate speeds. The tread looked aggressive, and the posted wear indication on the sidewall was acceptable for this weight vehicle. I agree with the MXM4 problem. I had those on a Sonata, and they did not last 35K.
Dave-S
I guess every tire manufacturer has their good and their bad tires. Sounds like the ones on Expedition are fine. But as I said the ones I had on my Sonata were not very nice to live with on a day to day basis. The Michelin's on my Fusion are really nice tires by comparison. ajvolpe
As the previous report indicated, the same model tire is not always the same when installed OEM.

GaryG
Did you experience a tire malfunction on your Explorer? Perhapes tire pressure was the problem. One reason, Lampe suggested, was Ford's advice to inflate Explorer tires to 26 pounds per square inch, lower than Firestone's recommendation of 30 pounds and lower than the pressure recommended for other popular SUVs. The 26-pound level left "little safety margin," Lampe said. Heat that can cause a failure builds up faster in a flatter tire carrying a heavy load in hot weather. (Ford said 26 psi is safe but recently accepted Firestone's recommendation and increased the suggested tire pressure to 30 psi.)
akirby
Let's not forget that the root cause was a tire defect which caused the recall and caused the Decatur plant to be shut down. The lower tire pressure left less room for error on the owner's part and underinflated tires exacerbated the tire defect. And inflating tires to the manufacturer's MAX rating is still borderline dangerous. They don't just pull those max limits out of thin air. Dave-S
The thing that aggravated me the most about that whole Firestone Tire fiasco was the fact you couldn't rent a trailer from U-Haul even after replacing tires and increasing tire pressure.. (I owned a 2000 AWD Explorer).

Doesn't apply to 2011+. It is rather ridiculous at this point.
aneekr
20" OE tires for 2015 Expedition, size 275/55R20, are from Hankook. There are two models offered depending on trim level. Dynapro ATM (all terrain) Dynapro HT (highway terrain) 2015 Expeditions with 18" wheels use Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude HT, and those with 22", Pirelli Scorpion Verde. ajvolpe
Thanks for the pic's of the Hankooks. I don't believe they made a bad choice with these tires for OE's.

I stand corrected, you are right. Either way I agree its stupid to not allow any 2002+ Explorer to rent a trailer.
1999 White C5 Coupe
I recently ordered a 2015 Ford Expedition Limited - with the 20" standard wheels and tires. I did not like that the vehicle came with all terrain tires. The salesperson said I could not specify an all season tire, unless I purchased the optional 22" inch tire and wheel package (which I did not want). Although I ordered the vehicle, the tires were almost a deal breaker. Does anyone know why Ford does not put all season tires on the standard 20" wheels on the Limited? Thank you.
