Dave-S
My SE has the My Ford Touch/Sync system with NAV. I notice that when I first insert a memory stick (with my music) in the USB port it takes it awhile to download all the information so it can be played. Is it downloading to memory or is it downloading to a hard drive? What about the NAV information?
akirby
It's not downloading anything. It's just building the index of songs for voice commands. You should be able to access the songs and playlists through the touch screen immediately.
ajcomputer
Also, the nav map data is stored on the SD card that is next to the USB ports.

A bit annoying they give you a SD card slot & then take it with the NAV card but it is what it is.
akirby
Pretty sure they added the sd card just for the nav maps. You already have 2 USB ports and USB sticks are fare more prevalent.

This, they just decided to let you use the SD slot if your car did not have nav equipped. I am using the SD slot so I don't have a dongle sticking out for my music (though I know they have nano sized USB sticks available).
akirby
Yep - I bought one that only sticks out about 3/8 inch. Works great.
92merc
Get an Elago Nano II USB reader. It takes a micro SD card, so you just pick your size and go. What sticks out is so small, you won't even notice it. http://www.amazon.com/Mobile-microSDHC-Memory-Reader--Works/dp/B002K7EJDK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417026340&sr=8-2&keywords=elago+usb

Um, yeah, okay...........we're all talking about USB "dongles" (small or large) & USB sticks are more common? Yeah, dongles are common but it would be easier if the slot was available & I don't have to use any dongle but as I said, it is what it is. It's pretty umimportant to me - both my USB slots have fried every SD card (in a dongle) I've tried & I haven't had it fixed yet (they work until you start the car with them in & then = gone, I'm assuming some sort of surge). akirby
I wasn't talking about dongles. I was talking about a usb flash drive. Virtually every pc and tablet other than ipads has a usb slot. Very few have SD card readers. You can plug almost any phone or media player into a usb port - but not a SD card slot. Point being a stand alone SD card slot would only be useful to a few people while multiple usb slots can be used by almost anyone with a phone, mp3 player or usb flash drive. That's why you get 2 usb ports and not a stand alone sd card slot.

Flash drives are a dying breed, be gone in a year or two - SD cards being cheap & dongles = death. Most modern computers come with an SD card reader & USB ports. But it matters little, cheap as RAM is Ford should have made the NAV internal.........odds are high it would be the same $149 for the upgrade - lol. akirby
How do you plug your media player or phone into a SD card slot? SD card is a storage device. USB is a communication bus. Edited November 26, 2014 by akirby
