FusionNewbie Posted November 9, 2014 Share Posted November 9, 2014 Hey all, I was leaving my local grocery store this afternoon and for some reason my car rumbled, stopped responding to the gas, and stalled out. It's just over 20,000 miles and haven't had a problem to date with it...as a matter of fact it got a whole checkup at the local dealer just last week. I quickly turned the car off and tried to restart it and the engine took 3-5 seconds to respond before it started up again...it was giving all the warnings like you'd receive with a dead engine. Got it to drive another 1000 feet...and once again the car stopped responding to the gas. After a few seconds, it started responding again and I got it home. So...questions: 1) Is it possible for a non-manual car to stall out like this? It felt like what would happen if you were driving a manual and you stalled out. 2) Worth taking into the dealer to check out? Thanks for any input! Did the engine actually stall or was it still running and just not responding to the throttle pedal? Either way, I would take the car in to a dealer if it were me to have it looked at. The same issue happened again about a month ago under the same circumstances (drove car to a grocery store, parked it for 10 minutes, left, and then while the car was rolling at about 10-15mph the car rumbled, stopped responding to the gas pedal and stalled). I took it into the dealer who looked into it and could find nothing wrong with it, of course. They even had the mechanic drive it for a few days to no avail. Then, yesterday, it happened again. All 3 instances have occurred when I've driven the car somewhere, parked it for a short amount of time, and then it happens as I'm going through the parking lot. Seriously at a loss right now...I'm coming up on my warranty - I think it's time to sell this and stay away from Ford's unfortunately. At my last job before I started at Ford my work van was a 2011 Transit Connect and it had a very similar problem. The electronics in the throttle body failed and it got stuck closed. My wife was pulling out of a parking spot and was going about 10mph when the car started surging forward, stalled and the brakes slammed on( the car hit the brakes, not my wife). Akirby has a pretty darn good chance of being right, but it could also be something like a sticking Evap VMV or other issue. The problem is that you have to be able to have the issue happen to the car to diagnose it, no matter whose name is on the valve cover. I was thinking purge valve myself since the purge valves have become the tube mounted DPFEs as far as frequent replacements lately. I dropped my vehicle off at the dealership for 2 weeks and didn't want to take it back until it was addressed. They did some research with Ford HQ and apparently came to the same conclusion you did - the purge valve was causing an issue after fill ups. I didn't account for it because honestly I didn't think about it...but I went back and cross-checked the dates of the incidents and my fill-ups and they happened either the day of or the day after filling up. According to the work order they replaced the purge valve, throttle body, and air intake.
