Key Not Recognized

Display shows "Key Not Recognized" on my 2013 Escape with IA key FOB.

Tried both FOB's, tried placing the FOB on the steering column indentation.

Called Ford service, the had me try everything again, had me check the main battery voltage (12.2 V)

They sent out a tow truck, and had to drag the Escape out of my garage.(On nylon wedges)

Ends up the battery was bad. (The one under the hood)

So if you get this message, try jumping the battery before being towed.

Why did they have to drag it out on wedges? You can put it in neutral even with a dead battery. The procedure is in the OM.

If you don't have a jumper box, get one. They're lifesavers and they're not super expensive. You can jump the vehicle no matter where it's parked.

The tow truck driver probable did not want to take a chance on scratching or breaking the bezel.

To be honest that's really up to the owner to perform (and know how to do it or look it up). Every vehicle is different and it's not reasonable for the tow truck driver to know how to do every vehicle (or take the time to figure it out).

That's why it's called the owner's manual not the tow truck driver's manual. :)

Not to mention a bezel is alot cheaper than a transmission. I wouldn't want anybody dragging my car. But thats cool that they have those wedges.
