Yet another large midsize that thoroughly outclasses the Chicago triplets under the hood. Get with the program Ford!!! I know the 3.5 is "coming". But 2008 is TOO far off. It NEEDS it now.

Ooooh. Meanwhile Ford is months away from launching only the second SULEV V6 (and only a few months after Ford launched the first). The difference between SULEV and ULEV is an order of magnitude, in most metrics.

Meanwhile, Ford is standardizing on 6-speeds

On the Five Hundred, you can have side impact airbags and traction control for the same price. Actually for around a thousand dollars less. Plus more room and available AWD. In fact you can have ABS, traction control, side airbags, and AWD for a little over the Azera's starting price. What about the warranty? That brings the price of the Five Hundred (equipped to match the base Azera) to just a little over the Azera's price.

 

"Hopefully incentives like the world's best warranty; a low, low price; and an increasing track record for reliability will drive the Azera toward a place in the spotlight. And allow Mr. Choe to take a well-earned vacation."

Oh, and by the way, it's way uglier than the Five Hundred. It makes the Lucerne and LaCrosse look like pure expressions of design briliance, by comparison.

 

It is a modern day ZIL of a luxury car.

I'm gonna have to disagree on that too. I'm not hot over the 500, but it is a clean, well-proportioned design. In fact, I'm witholding judgment until I see it, but I think that the planned pasting-on of the Fusion (427) grill as a rear-guard action against charges of blandness may be a mistake. The Azera, on the other hand, has swoops and doops and ooops. Design is like speaking: "It is better to remain silent and be thought an idiot, than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt." Hyundai's stylist would have done well to leave the pen in its holder.

One of the benefits of using an antique puter system is that it can help quantify the styling of vehicles like this - ie it wasn't worth my time to let (more than one of) the pictures download.

 

So its looks aren't so hot - what's important is the effort Hyundai is putting into upgrading its image. The effort shows imho.

 

F'rInstance - features - seems to me they're targeting a lot of the same customers Mercury is. FML needs to & will be upping the ante - 'course some things have to be in Lincolns before the others get 'em - just wish it would happen quicker.

Of what's currently available, if I was in charge of a dealer's inventory, I'd probably add

- alloys on most base 4cyls (+$395)

- T/A to all v6's (+$95)

- abs on most base models (+$595)

- air curtain on at least half of both base & Premier (+$595)

- comfort pkg & heated seats on a lot of Premiers (+$890).

 

Actually, I'd probably suggest having just one trim level with moonroof, HID headlites, climate, heated leather, nav, & audio pkgs as standalone options - maybe make "Premier" = all options (except nav) std.

 

Btw I like the 16" alloys, they'd be my preference, but an 18" option should be available - at least for trendy markets. Seems to me Milan has to straddle highline Camcords and people who want Acura/Infifiti/Audi features but not-quite pay for them.

I have to disagree. The exterior styling is a joke compared to the 500. While the 500 does not set the styling world on fire, it is classy and well proportioned. The Azera looks confused. However, IMHO the interior is a step ahead of the 500s. It seems more upscale. It's hard to tell until you can actually see and feel the materials.

I think the 500 is butt ugly. How could the same people who styled the Fusion make such a mess of the 500.

The 500 looks like they took 2 or 3 different cars and cobbled them together.

They're not supposed to be styled the same. They are aimed at different market segments. The 500 was purposely styled more conservatively than the Fusion.

Well, being that style is, for the most part, in the eye of the beholder (as this thread is proving with the differing opinions on the looks), there are some interesting features the car has for a sub-$30k vehicle (yes the Chicago cars do have many of these as well)...

 

* Electro-luminescent instrument panel

* Power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel (tied into memory features)

* Power-adjustable pedals (tied into memory features)

* Power windows with illuminated switches More

* Power rear sunshade (interesting in a sub $50K car)

* Automatic dual-climate control system

* Air Quality System

* Infinity® premium audio system More

* Rain-sensing wipers (again, becoming more standard on premium vehicles)

* LED taillights (Mercury has them though, but everyone made a big deal about them)

* Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls

* More total interior volume than the Toyota Avalon or the Nissan Maxima

* Electronic Stability Control / 4 Wheel ABS / Traction Control / Brakeforce

* 263 hp / 255 tq

 

On the Five Hundred, you can have side impact airbags and traction control for the same price. Actually for around a thousand dollars less. Plus more room.....

 

Surprisingly...they are pretty equal in interior size....
