Out of curiosity how long has MFT been around and how many upgrades has it gone through?

Since I've had my Edge (pretty early on in the MFT life-cycle) there have been several incremental patches and two major updates.

Looking back, it really is a vastly improved system than when I bought my car in terms of stability and speed, and I was one of the ones who didn't even experience too many issues either.

It launched September 2010 on the 2011 Edge as version 1.8.  There were at least 4 or 5 releases the first year and several more since then.  They're on 3.5 now.

If MFT is not a stand alone option it should be.  For those of you that like it and have no trouble with it more power to you.  Its killing Fords quality ratings.  You have to wonder at some point if anybody has considered scuttling  the entire system and starting over.  How long should it take them to work the bugs out?

Depends on how bad the original code was...the issue is that it might cause even more problems to totally redesign the code...the system seems pretty complex IMO and it would take at least 24 months of development to get it "right"

People have to quit thinking that IT is like a lightswitch...it just works when you turn it on...its far from that and it takes time for it to get that way.

MFT isn't near as bad as people make it out to be who don't own it..it has quirks but nothing show stopping IMO

Making it a standalone option would be a costly proposition, as MFT integrates controls for options that are only available on vehicles it is packaged in.  You would not only have to remove MFT from these vehicles, but you'd also need to integrate new controls to operate the extra gizmos only MFT currently operates.

It may be frustrating a few people but it's sure not hurting sales.  I agree it would be nice to have it optional so everyone could get exactly what they want.

They're already working on the next version on a new platform.

In regards to the MFT Navigation, why is it that the entry level Garmin GPS that costs less then $70 including Life Time Map Updates for both USA and Canada works flawlessly and is user friendly? No, its (not) Built In, it (can) be removed and taken from one Vehicle to another and it does`nt rely on any other OS to complete its mission to get you to where you want to go.  After a year or two, even if something fails or the LED Screen dies, Amazon or Ebay will ship you a newer updated Model for around the same price.  Exactly how much connectivity does one need while operating their Car?

I prefer the 8" screen and not having something sitting on the dash or stuck to the windshield.  It's worth it to me because it's integrated, larger and has far more functionality.

How long?? Never. IT is constantly being updated as issues, be they security or functional are discovered and fixed.

Why does your computer update constantly??

Obviously you use a computer, so you should understand this. Frankly, that is a pretty silly question.

Apple products update all the time. Android products have updates all the time. PC systems have upgrades all the time. Windows has upgrades all the time. If you don't want upgrades, don't buy computer based electronics.

Good grief.

Akirby, any more details of which you are aware? I've been seriously considering a C-Max Energi, but MFT is a deal killer for me as it stands. I specifically want a feature like Pandora (or other apps) that includes the art and the ability to control the app through MFT. I had not been following MFT closely, and I'm a little surprised that Ford is behind the 8 ball on this - Toyota has Pandora as a built in feature on its Entune option, so it just surprised me to find Ford behind in this specific area.

I wouldn't let MFT stop you, it's a very by-passable system. I do it all the time because I've had so many problems with navigation in all my MLT/MFT cars.  If you have a smartphone, you have a vastly superior mapping services available to you with a vastly superior voice system.  It takes a fraction of the time to bring up a location on your connected smartphone.  The same goes for media, just setup bluetooth audio and use your phones voice controls to get where you want.  I actually use an iPad mini with cellular connectivity to replace MLT in my cars.  The only thing I need MLT for is the climate controls.

Ford was way ahead 2.5 years ago but they've spent so much time trying to fix the horrible first release of the software they haven't been able to add new features.  It's been posted here before but I think the new system will be Windows 8 based but I would expect to see it within the next year or so.  My guess is they're putting all their development into the new system and won't be adding much to the current one.  There is a decent chance it will be backwards compatible with the current MFT hardware.

Well I guess that sums up my dilemma. I won't make the purchase without the apps capability, so if I knew for certain that the new system would be backwards compatible, then I could move forward. I also really, really want HIDs, which one owner has actually bought from Europe, and rigged into his C-Max. Too bad Ford isn't offering the option over here - I got my first factory HIDs in 2005, and promised myself not to buy another car without them. So I'd be cheating on my promise if I spring for the 'Max.

Wow - I guess we really are in a new age when a car purchasing decision hinges on integration with a smartphone app or the type of headlamps.

You can still use pandora through bluetooth and you can change to HIDs if they're that important (helps if it comes with projectors).

I had HIDs in a 2003 Aviator but not in the 2008 Edge and honestly I never missed them.

Different strokes I guess.....

Exactly. I know what I want, and I don't plan to cough up $30,000+ without getting what I want. Especially when the competition offers these things on similar or even lower scale models.

That's not really a MFT problem though. That's a every-car-that-has-ever-been-equipped-with-onboard-navigation problem.
