robertlane
I'm interested to see what everyone thinks what the Lincoln MKR should be like? What engine should it have as standard and should there be an optional one? Should it be FWD, RWD, AWD, etc.? Who would go for a manual transmission? What will the primary competition be? Other thoughts?

Other thoughts? in order: the only "R" Lincoln needs is imho Lincoln needs more drivetrain choices in general - for global penetration min: 2.7EB, 3.5EB, 5.0EB, Hybrid tho imho having ALL Lincoln drivetrains partly/variously electrified is better so make that last Hybrid a PlugIn technically: V-Awd (Virtual AWD/thru-the-road), tho the Continental's petrol engines would ALL be longitudinal, powering only the rear wheels nope type: S-class & CLS, 7er & 'GranCoupe-6', Cadillac ULS, XJ, Quattroporte... price: any sedan in the $60-97k range way more thoughts than time Edited January 4, 2013 by 2b2
NickF1011
I'd say mirroring the Mustang's powertrain choices would be fine for the most part, except perhaps not offering the SC 5.8L. Just make adjustments to refine the exhaust note and maybe some changes to things like motor mounts to isolate things a bit more. IRS would be a must, but that seems to be the direction the next Mustang is going also, so that likely isn't an issue.
akirby
You realize you're asking a loaded question, right? If Lincoln does build a MKR, I'd like to see a coupe and convertible. But a sedan would sell better and I'm not sure you can do both from one platform. It should be RWD/AWD with a highly tuned 3.7L V6 base engine at 330 hp and 2 ecoboost engines putting out 400 hp (3.7L EB?) and 500 hp (5.0L EB?). Obviously this would be a niche vehicle and would have to share a platform with something else to be viable. But it could also be exported to Europe so that might help. fordmantpw
I think it should be RWD, with EB engines only: 2.7L and 3.5L. But, it should add AWD ability by adding electric to power the front wheels on demand. Allow Lincoln to show that you can have your cake and eat it too...great performance PLUS great fuel economy! Automatics only, because the take rate for manuals would be so low, plus working out the electrics with a manual would be a non-trivial. Coupe, sedan, and convertible...if it can be done with one platform and not make terrible compromises. Make this a Lincoln-only vehicle. Nothing comparable in the Ford lineup except for the platform. But, don't sacrifice more profitable vehicles to make it happen.
2b2
I'm interested to see what everyone thinks what the Lincoln MKR should be like? part 2 the MKR is only about one'n'half inches longer than the new Z so imho building it NEAR to what it was, is a waste of time/resources and would just internally cannibalize sales with Another mid-sizer... ...and/so 2 RWDs is the minimum imho & avoids tokenism. In addition to my Continental, I'd go with a Mustang-co-platformed sportsedan (most important) and some kind of coupe-cabrio (to differentiate from the Mustang's separate Coupe and Convertible models). The lower volume would also benefit from a single model to meet both niches. ALSO FoMoCo basically already announced a 3-series 'target' when they said they were taking Lincoln into the "highest-volume Lux segment" ... nothing else comes close in sales to the 3er/C-class(/ATS)((/A4-S4))... ...imho the "LincStangs" would also compete with the 2-door 6-series (the BMW that looks like a gussied-up Mustang-clone to me). Drivetrains would be the same as the Continental - possibly sharing frontend structure or at least most engineering. In place of automatic would be clutchless manual with paddle shifters and/or very slight movement of gear shift selector with auto blip. So a PDK in effect. Take your choice, and of course an automatic mode if you don't want to select a gear and want it done for you. PDK type take rates on BMW and Porsche models are so high that manual crowd is getting nervous they won't be offered anymore as long as you can hold a gear longer if you wish and can shift faster without clutch and with auto blip feature. PDK trans are obsoleting the manual unfortunately. I prefer the manual, but I'm a dinosaur.
