How many miles?

We've all heard the lame jokes trying to demerit Ford in some sort of way: "Found on road dead"; "I hear Ford is coming out with heated bumpers so your hand doesn't cold while you push it." So I thought this thread would be a nice way to critique the longevity and/or reliability of Ford power trains.

 

Rules:

 

1. Ford must be owned by you or someone in your family

2. Post the Engine specifications, Model & Year

3. Doesn't have to be currently running.

3.0 Duratec V6 2003 Escape

 

When I had the oil changed once the attendant came in to talk to the owner of a late 80s Ranger. Assuming the odometer had rolled, he asked if it had 186,000 miles. No, the owner replied, it had 486,000 and was the original engine.

Parents:

 

1988 Ford Thunderbird 3.8L V6 105,000

 

There aren't many of these seen on the roads these days.

 

1995 Taurus "Vulcan" 3.0 V6 115,000

 

My friend also had a 1994 Tempo automatic with over 220,000 on it when sold. We routinely jammed it into drive from reverse to do burn outs back in the high school days and the trans still shifted fine even after all this abuse, somehow.

83 Turdbo Coop 2.3T - Odo shows 65k miles, I'm assuming 165K

86 Mustang GT 5.0 - Odo shows 60k, I'm assuming about 140-150k with non-stock rear gears.

94 Ranger 2.3 - 155K

05 Five Hundred 3.0 Duratech- Turned 50k this week.

 

All run fine but the TurboCoop has a troubling miss and is downright cantankerous until driven a few miles. I'm suspecting some kind of intake leak.

 

I had a 76 LTD with a 400 that had 174K miles. It got sold cheap after the person who replaced the timing gears/chain (me) didn't have anti-freeze on hand and filled the radiator with water to be replaced with anti-freeze before winter, I forgot. :slap:

2002 Taurus SES Sport with 24 valve 3.0 V6.......35,000 miles and same drivtrain with no problems

 

2004 Taurus SE with 24 valve 3.0 V6.........115,000 miles with same drivetrain and no problems....company car

 

My experience says that 3.0, 24 valve V6 is bulletproof and trans if serviced every 35,000 miles is bulletproof also. My personally owned 2002 Taurus had its trans flushed at 33,000 miles and coolant flushed every third season. The company owned Taurus has had no such service at all except for tires, brakes, and oil changes.

2004 Taurus is SES, not SE. Not near as nice as my 2002 model. You can tell Ford started cheapening Taurus for fleet duty by 2004. Interior of 2004 has harder, more unattractive surfaces than 2002. Less amenities also.

Ford's modular engines are pretty indestructible. My mothers 4.0L runs like new with 115k miles on it and no transmission fluid changes so far.

 

As a side note: It sounds really good in the cockpit @ WOT

 

Not sure if the 3.0 has something in common with the 4L cologne though.

2006 F150 4x4 5.4L 33,800 miles

 

1982 Mustang GT 5.0L 90,000 aprox miles, I have to move a motorcycle out of the way to open the door and I dont feel like it right now. Stock block, forged pistons, iron WP 1.94 Windsor jr cyl heads, Crane cam and roller rockers, Ford Motorsport intake and short headers etc, T-5 transmission, FMS 8.8 3:73 axle etc...All done through the years owned it since '83. The only thing replaced due to breakage was the original 7.5 rear axle. Body and interior are bone stock.

 

Brothers '95 F150 XLT 5.0L 2wd has well over 250,000 hard miles and runs great.

 

Mothers '93 Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6L has less than 75,000 and looks/runs like new...Go Panthers!

 

These are current Fords family has a long history with these great vehicles.

I've got three daily drivers I rotate through:

 

1994 Ranger 2.3L I4/ 5-speed manual, 142,XXX miles, running condition

2003 F150 FX4 5.4L V8 / 4 speed auto, 195,XXX miles, running condition

1998 Contour 2.5L V6 / 5 speed manual, 122,000 miles, running condition

 

I really WANT that new '10 F150 but I really don't NEED it...

2007 F-150 5.4 V-8 - 33k

2010 Milan 2.5L 4cyl. - 3k

 

Never had a major issue with any Ford I have owned. I love Ford! Looking to buy a 2011 mustang when the new 5.0 comes out!

Mine: 2001 F150 Supercrew XLT 4x2 4.6 2V - 140,000 miles

Mine: 1999 Mustang GT 4.6 4V (swapped) - 117,000 miles, ~27,000 miles on new engine, original engine failure was not Ford's fault but Comp Cams valve spring's fault.

Mom's: 2005 Freestyle - 65,000 miles

Dad's: 2002 F250 Super Duty 7.3 PSD XLT 4x4 Supercrew: 92,000 miles (often tows 10K lb. trailer over 300 miles)

Uncle's: 2006 F150 5.4 3V XLT 4x4 Supercrew: ~50,000 miles. No problems.

 

The F150, Freestyle, and SD have all been very reliable, virtually flawless.

'06 Ford E150 Club Wagon. 34K miles, zero issues. Replaced a:

'97 Ford Crown Victoria. 89K miles, zero issues. Officially daughter's DD.

 

Our Family:

 

me: '01 Mercury Grand Marquis. 151,000 miles, nothing but routine maintenance and wear-out items. Had a '98 prior to this one that I sold with 130K on it- same story.

 

wifey: '08 Ford Expedition EL. 31K miles. Too soon to tell on this one, but seems much more buttoned-down than our prior '03. This is turning into daughters de facto DD. :hysterical: (We don't really mind having a new driver with 6,000 lbs. of Ford wrapped around her).

 

Son: '06 Ranger S/C 4X4. 94K miles. This truck has been to hell and back- multiple times. Wheelin' rig, tow rig, work rig- does it all without complaint. Has gone through 3 clutches, four sets of brakes, and three sets of tires, which should give an indication of the type of usage it gets.

 

Honorable mention: my '93 F150 S/C 4X4. Put 232,000 miles on this truck with minimal issues. When sold, everything worked, original powertrain, drove great. Best anything I've ever owned- shouldn't have ever sold it. :banghead:

1967 Mustang 289 - 117,000-----pulled and stored (low oil pressure-bearing noise started) 390 with about 3200miles

2005 Escape 3.0 91,000-----running (1 COP)

 

Past:

1988 F-150 302 154,000----sold (cylinder heads, CAT...both under warranty, exhaust manifold)

1994 Escort 165,000----sold (coil pack, TPS)

 

Family:

1967 Mustang 390 125000----running (modified)

1994 F-150 302 150000----running (exhaust manifold)

2005 F-150 5.4 63,000----running (nada)

2002 Focus ZTS auto 2.0L 160,000 miles

 

Only items I don't consider normal wear were a cracked thermostat housing and a leaking valve cover gasket...other than that she's been rock solid showing up my previous cars and all other around me (including those Jap lovers). Oil and transfuild changes keep it running smooth with zero major repairs.
