japan made let me down

This morning my escort would not start. The key was on the on position and would not spring back. Obviously not the starter, alternator, or battery, so it must be in the collum. Took the shroud off and found that the tip of the cylinder attached to the electrical start was snapped off, a very small peice made of metal. Now at this point I decided to hide the fact my Ford was broken so as not to add any fuel to the sceptic fire, except that I noticed where the collum was made. Right there on the collum is stamped MADE IN JAPAN. A '95 escort with a steering collum made in japan. Cant wait for my nieghbor the mechanic which loves his japanese made nissan to ask why my Ford wont start.

Aren't Escorts 91 and up made by Mazda? Which is Japanese?

I've had the worst luck with the Mazda based Escorts. My wife and I each bought 1 (at the same time - Mine a sedan, hers a Wgn) and 2 years later I took an absolute beating. Blue Book went from the $13K I paid new, to $3800. I had too many small problems with it and it only had 22k miles on it. My wifes 3 weeks later was hit by a Gd. Cherokee and totalled. It just clipped the front qtr panel of the Escort and they totalled the Escort.

 

Then my wife got a used HBack of the same year just this past April. The day after we got the title and transferred plates to it, she was hit in the rear at a light. Other than a scratched bumper cover, a bent tailp[ipe, it still drove and all, they totalled it out, saying it had over $3000 damage.

 

We've decided to never buy another Escort again. A number of people I know have had multiple problems with theirs too. Ford could have done MUCH better on the Escort/Tracer.

I have had 3 or 4 escorts from 91 to 93 and an 88 and 95 tracer. Never had that much problem out of them. Matter of fact I had 318,000 miles on the 88 tracer and 237000 on the 93 escort lx.(traded the other two on bigger vehicles)

I had a '98 Escort Wagon, assembled in Hermosillo Mexico. I did not know it was a Mazda based design. It would have had around 60,000 mi. when I traded it in on my '02 T-Bird, but it was one of the most reliable, well-put together cars I have ever had. The only problem the entire time was a loose speaker wire in the right front door. Other than that zero problems. My wife even went so far as to say that it seemed to be as good as her Hondas (5 Accords in 20 years, with virtually no problems on any of them. The first one - an '83 - we drove to 144,000 mi., and got $8,500.00 of its original $10,000.00 price on trade.) Trade-in value on the Escort was, as you say, not stellar. But, compared to how far upside down I am on the T-Bird....... and compared to the number of problems I have had on the T-Bird, the Escort seems pretty good in hindsight. 'Course, it was as exciting as canned peas.

Collum? Did he say Collum, or........GOLLUM???
